Yes, with the new law as of Jan. 07 everyone needs a passport to fly to Canada and Mexico. You can still drive into Canada or Mex without a passport till Jan.08. |

We visit my in-laws in Vancouver every year and all customs ask for is their birth certificate. It's easier going to Canada, coming back is tougher, but they ask for the same thing. |

I think they need passports, but you can call the immigration offices for both countries and find out. Be sure to get a letter saying it's okay to take them out of the country if you are traveling alone as a parent - those custom's agents may not let you take them as they assume you are stealing your own child. |

Just my opinion

Any human being, regardless of age, needs a passport issued from his/her country to fly out of their country and into another................. no matter where in the world it is.

Yes and in Mexico and Caribbean Too!
New law!
Be ready for it to take 10+ weeks to get it too, because of the law change the passport turnaround time has increased.
Just got mine in January and it took 7 weeks! |

If you are travelling with them, but without your spouse, you may need a sworn statement that you have their permission to take the children out of the country. If you are divorced, you may need to show custody papers.
Children aged 7 and 2 can be put on your passport, which would simplify things a whole lot. . |

Yes, they need passports. All Americans need passports to travel by air to Canada now.
For minors under 14, they will need not only proof of citizenship (their birth certificate) but proof of their relation to the parent (you) which is presumably also on the birth certificate. Plus you will need photo ID, and an additional form, available online or at the office/post office, that the other parent is approving the passport. If you are a single parent, there are some documents you can bring instead of the other parents' permission, or the other parent can appear with you, and must have photo ID, too.
The details are found on the State Department's web site, which I'm including a link to. |
