If she is a US citizen she will need a government issued ID and proof of citizenship to get into Canada. However, if she is AWOL from the US army, Canada will send her back.

She will need a passport to get in to Canada. However, once the Canadian officials become aware that she is AWOL, she will be deported back at the request of the American Military. Canada doesn't protect former military people who have gone AWOL anymore. That was only during Vietnam.

Once she is reported as AWOL, her ID will be entered into a database, and it can be flagged at border-crossings. Current requirements for entry into Canada are I.D. and proof of citizenship or birth-certificate, and PASSPORT to re-enter the U.S. The requirements are going to be increasingly enforced. so slipping-by won't be nearly as easy as it once was. I would strongly advise against going AWOL, especially if she leaves the country as part thereof, it might be grounds for charges of desertion in the court-martial procedings that will follow her assured capture. Advise her to read the UCMJ, article 85, and see what it says about it. The section on penalties is particularly revealing, "If the offense is committed in time of war, by death or such other punishment as a court-martial may direct" Last time I looked, we were in a time of war.

Why are you asking the legal way to do something illegal? If she is going to break the law, why bother about passports or ID?

She can only travel on her military passport if she is travelling UNDER ORDERS. For any other travel she needs a civilian passport. She will not be allowed to fly as a civilian without a civilian passport. and...if she is dumb enough to go awol, she will be spending time in a federal prison.

sad to say this is nto the 70's if she thinks its easy to go awol here it is not . An american soldier tried that a year or two a go with his family and after a court case was sent back
they will want to know how long your planning to stay at the border....if you outstay your welcome and imigration does catch up eventually as you can not apply for many things here citizens she will be caught easily

Tell her to not even bother with Canada. After thirty days of being AWOL she will be dropped from rolls, listed as a deserter, and a federal arrest warrant will be issued for her. Whether she's in the U.S. or Canada, if she's stopped by cops and her i.d. is run, the warrant will come up and she'll be arrested. If she's arrested in Canada it's a safe bet the military will come down harder on her. Tell her to just stay in the states and do her best to avoid the cops. They will not come looking for her. The military really doesn't care enough about people going AWOL to pursue them. In the event she does get arrested, odds are she wont even be court matialed. More likely she'll be kicked out with an other than honorable discharge. I've seen it happen more than once.

tell your friend to consider the consequences or her actions, does she want to be hiding all her life?
