My roommate wants to go to Canada but he is a convicted felon.. problem?

Will he be able to cross the border legally? What kind of documentation will be needed? Would he be able to get a work visa if we wanted to stay?

Depends, how long ago was he convicted of this? If it's 5 years or more and he hasn't been in trouble since then, you'll be able to cross. If he's been in trouble in the past 5 years then they will deny him access and arrest him if he tries to cross again.

But it really all depends what the conviction was and if your roommate has any other things on his criminal record.

Check out this site on the CBSA website for more info...

If your boyfriend is a convicted felon, he will not be able to enter Canada. Period. No matter what.
You can't just visit and then stick around, hoping you can just "get" a work visa.
Canada doesn't want convicted felons here. We have enough of our own.

Sorry, but with a criminal record he will be refused entry to Canada. That's a hard and fast rule and even celebrities are not immune. Tough luck, but those are the breaks. .

He cannot come to Canada with a felony record. And he'd never get a work visa.

Can't be absolutely positive about this...but pretty sure he can't legally cross the border....I know that when I had a criminal record, before I got a pardon, I was not allowed to cross the border into the US.

No he wont be allowed into Canada and no he won't receive a work visa if he can't get into the country. You can't apply from inside the country anyway and you have to provide proof that you have a job and enough money to support yourself.

Most employers in Canada do a criminal record check, and if his profession or trade isn't on a skills shortage list he won't receive a work visa.

You can't just stay.

You have to apply for permission to stay and work in Canada and your boyfriend is going to be turned down because of the felony. He may well be turned down at the border even as a tourist as the two countries cross check each other's data bases.
