I would recommend that you buy some Canadian Currency. Most big consumer retail stores will accept US currency as their computers are all centrally processed to accept it at the rate of exchange which has been programmed. Places like Canada Safeway, Walmart, McDonalds Restaurants, Burger King, Real Canadian Superstore, Tim Hortons etc. If he hasn't converted it before he arrives in Winnipeg he can always go to 24 hour currency convertors located at the airport or money mart. There are many private stores who will accept the US$, but they will be quick to take advantage of your son by giving him a lower rate than what he would get from most banks or money marts. So ideally if you can, purchase it before you leave home. Hope this helps.

Not everyone takes US money in Canada. I worked at Safeway and they usually won't. During Christmas I can imagine it will be for sure not. For sure get Canadian money either before he goes or at a bank in Canada. Even if it's not a lot he can ask before he buys stuff if they take american money. But the other thing is if he uses American money at a store he'll probably not get the right exchange rate and get ripped off that way.

To be safe I would get Canadian money as many businesses don't accept American currency especially since Winnipeg is not close to the border.

I would recommend converting it to Canadian currency. Not every business will accept US currency.

Richard B: Canadian ATMs do not dispense American currency.

Please convert to Canadian. Not all businesses can accept American and it's just respectful since you are in a different country.

The fella that said ATM's provide American $ is incorrect.
