As a Status Ojibwe, whose Reserve is situated in Central Ontario, but lives on a Northern Ontario Reserve, I can tell you, there are no "villages" per say. Not in the sense that I think you are looking for. The Reservations all have quite normal houses, that you would see anywhere else. There is a small Native set-up, at the Pioneer Village, in Black Creek, Ontario, as well as one in Timiskaming, Ontario. That one is quite extensive, and you must be flown in, via helicopter. The local Native peoples operate it, to show what daily life would have been like 150-200 years ago.

If you travel to my Reserve, all you will find is discount cigarettes, Bingo Halls, Chip Stands, and a Casino.

There are Native American communities in every province.
Almost all are very nice places to visit.
Native American Indians are very welcoming, generous people.

Although I am not from that area I know that many aboriginal communities have started tourist oriented projects over the years. I suggest trying some of the websites for further information. The following website contains links to several of them.

If you are hoping to see Indians living the way they did in movies, teepees and so on you will be disappointed. The natives in Canada are no different in terms of housing, activities, jobs, dress, businesses and life styles than the rest of us Canadians.

What you will see is a small settlement or a "village" type of people, living in "modern" housing, driving SUV's, and cars. Modern schools, clinics etc, just like any other Cdn village.

The difference is these are designated as Reserve Lands and as such the natives have for the most part self government, their own Reserve Police, etc.

There are a some "touristy" type developments, much like Barkerville in Northern BC which supposedly show the way people lived in the past, however IMO hollywood has had too much of an influence on these and historical accuracy is often lost. An example is found immediately after turning onto the "scenic" route from Cache Creek to Lilliooet BC. Our Indians in the interior of BC never lived in teepees.

IMO this is a tragedy as the Kamloops indians had a facinating history that so many people know nothing about ! When I tell people about it they are usually amazed and surprised and have never heard of the unique history. IE: placing their dead in caves along the river bank, sitting up, facing the rising sun. The arid climate mummified them. Living in underground houses known as a "kickwillie".

I think this is much more interesting than a hollywood style teepee !

Indians call themselves Indians in Saskatchewan (SIFC Saskatchewan Indian Federated College) and BC, some use the word Aboriginals, some use First Nation People, some use Native, it depends on where you are in Canada and so dont let anyone tell you there is one name used by all of them and that the word Indian is offensive, only in the mind of racists who have used it as such.

Let me just say the proper name instead of 'Native Indians' is either Aboriginals or Naive Americans (the best is Aboriginals). To call someone 'Native Indian' or 'Indian' is offensive and in Canada, all Canadians take easy offense to any discriminatory words or phrases. Just to let you know.

Hi
I live in the middle of canada and our tribe is Ojibwas. You can google from there to find all the reserves. I was raised by the Apache. And I returned home when I was ten. You be careful drinking with them.
