Next year I am travelling to Canada. Is the airport security just as strict as they are in the USA? |
When you fly out of USA you have to keep your luggage unlocked for security checks. Is this the same in Canada? |

The same customs requirements apply in Canada as in USA. Canada Customs will ask you if you packed the luggage yourself, and they reserve the right to open your luggage if they deem it necessary. Any carry-on luggage is likely to be scanned and suspicious items will be stopped. Open containers of facial cream, sharp objects, etc may be confiscated.
As for the luggage going into the baggage compartment, you will not necessarily know what is happening to that. I normally lock it on any flight I take, but these are the flimsy American Tourister padlocks that can be opened with just about any key or piece of metal.
It is more for the fact that if I see the padlock is closed the way I had it, I know it has not been "tampered" with, and I can feel reasonably sure that no one put anything in or took anything out. If they choose my bag and break the lock, I can buy new ones at the luggage store for $2.
The last time I travelled, I saw that they had the drug & bomb sniffing dog working the baggage carousel in Trudeau International Airport (Montreal). That might be something interesting that I had not seen in any of the US airports I've flown in or out of. |

Most places that I've traveled to if the customs wanted to look in the bags they will have you do it in front of them because they want to be sure that the bags and the stuff in it are yours. Security at the airport used to be stricter than in the States but now the US has caught up to Canada. At least in Canada you don't have to take your shoes off and have them x-rayed or be patted down. |

Airport security is just as strict here, and the same rules apply. You will be asked all the same questions, did you pack the bags yourself; have you left them unattended for any period of time; you must declare there are no dangerous objects within etc. As well your carry-on luggage goes through the same process, so don't bother packing any travel shampoos etc.
Customs is a different matter altogether, and it's true that Canadian officials are a little less rude than American counterparts, but that doesn't mean you won't get the official with the rather brusque manner.
And I'm not sure who mentioned it, but it is quite possible you will be asked to remove shoes and belts for the x-ray, and will get wanded and/or patted down in the screening process. |

Yes, customs around the world have the right to search your luggage, if you lock it they can and will break the lock if they need to get in it, BE WARNED!! |

same rules apply, but I find US customs and security quite rude...all the time, whereas I've had pretty average experiences with Canada. |
