Niagara falls in the winter?

Mom and I are thinking of going for a girls weekend out soon. I know it will be cold, we live in Michigan so no big deal. What kind of shopping is there? Is it worth going this time of year or is everything closed? Anything we should make sure and do besides see the falls? Thanks for your help.

It is very cold in Niagara Falls in winter. VERY cold. The falls do not freeze entirely, so water splashes over them, and that can cause mist to spray and then freeze on contact. If there is a wind, it will be extremely cold, so wear very warm clothing (layers of it). In the summer, a person can get soaked from walking near the falls due to the mist, so figure what that would be like if mist sprayed on you when you are walking there in the winter.

Someplace else you might like to visit that is nearby is Niagara-on-the-Lake. It is a historic town, maybe 10 miles from the falls. It has lots of shops that are appealing to tourists, and they have done their best to preserve the "old town" atmosphere. I am attaching some information for you. I hope you will enjoy your trip!

blah
many things r closed but the falls r more beautiful in winter , trust me.

but its very cold!!!!

We go the Niagara Falls for girls weekends all the time in the winter. The Canadian side. Things are NOT closed. There are shows and shopping and the wineries are open. The casinos are open. True, it is cold. But I just got an email from expedia and if you book now you can get a nice room in a nice hotel for around $50.00 Canadian. You can't beat that !

If you and your mother don't like large crowds then visiting Niagara Falls during the winter is a good choice. Like some others have said everything is open on Clifton hill and surrounding areas except Marine land, and boat tours for obvious reasons. The best time to visit during the winter is on the weekends because Clifton hill is in full swing with niteclubs (Rumours and Mardi Gras) being open if you like that kind of thing. During the week Monday to Thursday would be good for cheaper hotel rates if your on a budget this is your best option.

As for what you should see I suggest the bird kingdom, and the butterfly conservatory you also might want to go check out Niagara-on-the-lake but that would only be good on the weekend.

If you like to try your luck check out the casinos, there are 3 casinos in the Niagara area. Two casinos in Niagara Falls Canada (Casino Niagara and Fallsview Casino). One Casino in Niagara Falls NY (Seneca Casino).

A couple of notes about things being closed that I didn't mention there are some things closed like tour activities (fort George, boat tours, Marineland) these kinds of activities are closed because of the weather.

Anyway I hope that helps and I'm sure you will enjoy your stay in Niagara Falls.

Shopping is good year-round in the falls. The tourism industry realizes that there are tourists that go in the winter because the falls are gorgeous when they are partially frozen. There are still things open.
The falls looks amazing in the winter. When the mist gets caught in the wind and hits stuff, it can freeze in the most interesting ways! One time I saw the ice frozen on a light post and it looked like a man that hit the post. You could see the head, 2 arms and 2 legs! YEARS ago there was an ice bridge that formed. It was so strong that there were vendors on it. I saw this about 6 or 7 years ago. People travel from all over the world to see the falls in winter. It's wonderful!

Some of the tour boats don't operate in the winter, but it is a great place to visit. There are casinos on the CDN side of the falls. There's also a Hard Rock. The falls don't freeze solid, but the ice hanging on the sides and the rocks makes it very interesting.

There's also an outlet mall.

Shopping is great even Ianthe winter. On Lundys Lane there is a Factory Outlet Mall.Good prices. Bird aviary and Butterfly Sanctuary from Parks commission are good places to visit. If you are not into Casinos. The Ice bridge over the bottom of the Niagara river after the falls forms only in cold winters. But we have entertainment at the Avalon ballroom at Fallsfew casino .Paul Anka and Terry Clark in February/ hope this info helps a bit. so come and have fun

Most shops are closed that time of year. It,s really to expensive to shop in that area.
Really a bad time to go, as it will be very cold.
Niagara on the lake is worth a visit. shopping and resturants there are very good. i,d wait and go later in the year.
