It tells you that, unlike any previous president, he recognizes that he has friends to the North and as we both share the North American continent (with Mexico) it behooves us to strengthen the bonds between us before we concern ourselves with countries on a different continent.
Far from being a tradition for US presidents to visit Canada first, some US presidents NEVER visited Canada during their terms of office. And a few didn't get around to it until their terms were almost over. |

It is traditional for a newly elected american president to pick Canada for their first international visit. |

It tells you almost nothing. Canada is our largest trade partner. Where would you have gone? |

It's a long-standing tradition for new presidents to make Canada their first official foreign visit. Dubya is notable for going to Mexico first.
We are America's hat. Why shouldn't Obama come here first. We've got all the oil, lumber, and mining material (well, most of it). |

It is a long-standing tradition that the President makes Canada the first foreign visit he makes. This has been done since Kennedy. George Bush was the first Pres since to not do this.
I guess Bush just wanted to visit all the jobs that have migrated South to Mexico. |

If an American asked "Harper picks the US for his first trip. What does that tell you? What a smart man he is.", we Canadians would consider the American to be boastful and arrogant. |

I can't help but think it has more to do with the NAFTA agreement. Wasn't one of his campaign speeches about renegotiating the agreement? I wonder if he's interested in our water and oil too. Not to sound suspicious or anything.... |

I'm angry that I'll have to watch him shake hands with Harper (I wanted to see Stéphane Dion)
... but I'm still happy he's coming to Canada. |

I can't take Obama seriously.
He sounds too much like The Rock.
Hope he isn't coming here to lay the smackdown on us. |
