I don't blame you for your indignation! That is terrible and I wish that guy will get caught. Its not acceptable Canadian behaviour. The police will be on your side. Maybe you should get some "spy-shop" video camera recorder equipment and catch the culprits with evidence. I wish you a welcome and a better future in Canada.

How can you be sure its due to the nationality on the license plates and not someone who just has it out for you or your husband?? My Canadian license plated vehicle has been keyed twice in the last few months, both times it was a group of bored dumb *** teens out to get some kicks. Two thumbs up for parking lot security cameras.

I don't think anyone on Yahoo! can answer this question for you. Only the idiots that actually scratched your husband's truck can say for sure why they did it.

It is sad to think that someone may hurt you or damage another person's property just because they see you as from a specific country or ethnic background. It is also sad that you feel you have to do the same...you think it was done by a Canadian because you are American.

I can tell you that most Canadians would never do that just to send a message to Americans. As someone else mentioned, it could be for some total other reason that you are not aware of.

Here in Montreal, a friend of mine bought her first car and parked it at the corner near her house. One day she came out to find someone had ripped the passenger side mirror off the car and thrown it down on the sidewalk. She had it repaired, and the next time she parked in that same location, the mirror got ripped off again. It turns out other people had the same problem, and it was actually the owner of the home on the corner, who felt that corner was supposed to be his personal parking spot, and he would punish anyone that parked in "his" spot.

So you may want to ask yourself these questions:

Did the damage to the truck happen in the same general area?

Was this at his place of work, your home, or in two different shopping mall parking lots? Anything that gives you an idea of a pattern.

If at home, maybe a neighbour hates you. If at work, maybe a co-worker is annoyed at your husband.

Could someone have a personal grudge against your husband?

And as someone else said, since he is in Canada now, I would get the plates changed to Alberta ones, perhaps set up surveillance that keeps an eye on the truck if you can, and then see if the keying continues.

I'm a Canadian living in the States and one thing I notice is everywhere I go (I've been to at least 20 and twice as many cities), is just how inconsiderate so many people are here in the U.S. when they park their cars. For example, they will park on the line or over the line, taking up two spaces instead of one. Does your husband park like this? If so, this may be why his truck is getting keyed. I don't condone it, but this may be the reason. If not, then it may very well be the plates. Most Canadians do not hate Americans, we're very reasonable, rationale people... but all countries have their "assholes" so unfortunately, maybe one of Canada's few assholes (often stupid teenagers) are screwing with the truck. Or maybe you or your husband were targeted for another reason other than being American; have either of you gotten into any disagreements with anyone? I'd suggest changing the plates. If you've been in the country for 5 months, you should have already done this by now. If it continues, you'll know it wasn't the plates.

I'm from Ontario and as a Canadian, that is embarrassing to know.

I lived in Pennsylvania for a few years and travelled extensively along the Eastern US and had nothing but very positive experiences.

About the truck getting keyed, I'm pretty sure it's some drunken redneck who has probably never left his town.

Probably has nothing to do with where you are from. You just parked in a spot where an idiot hangs out. I've lived in the States and i know you also have that problem. Wish I knew of a way to catch him but I don't. Sorry this happened to you.

Edit: Keyed means someone dragged a key or other sharp instrument along the paint job of the vehicle.

I feel really bad for what happened...but i don't think your truck got keyed because your from America. It happened to my brother a few times and he is Canadian! I think it's just idiots that may live around you. So don't feel bad or mad.
