On a recent visit to Toronto Canada I recieved a $30 parking ticket on College Ave., do I have to pay it?

You should pay it. There is a phone number on the back of the ticket and you can pay with a credit card.

However, since you live in the United States, the municipality cannot go after you. In Ontario, they prevent you from renewing your driver's license, but they cannot do that to you in the US. There is no link between a parking ticket and crossing the border back to Canada.

A parking ticket is issued by the city. There isn't a whole bunch they can do if you don't live in the country.

You should pay it. Its only $30. Not doing so could result in you not being allowed into the country later in the future. They have your tags in the system and it shows your an American, so it can be sent to Canadian Customs. Just pay it and forget it happened.

I wouldn't bother. As a municipal matter, it would not show up in any immigration records, which are managed federally.

You can ignore it as long as you don't plan on ever going back. If unpaid, the city could issue a warrant for your arrest. Even then, the only way those get served for parking tickets is if you get picked up for some other offense or are involved in an accident or in some other way come into contact with police.

if they get that whole credit rating system hooked onto it, you can flush yours dowwwwnnn the toilet (along with all your credit cards)

just pay it off, before it becomes $300. or better yet, fight it - go to court. if you're lucky, you'll end up with a no-contest and the case will be dropped.

That is a good question.
I got one in Florida and COMPLETELY forgot about it. I don't even know where it is to pay it. I never got any sort of letter from the city or the rental car company.
Toronto may be a little more strict because it is a bigger city. I don't think they will alert the border patrol or anything like that.

Penny Hill is not quite right. There are some Canadian provinces that are plugged into the multi-state reporting system that some American states have and in such cases failure to pay an Ontarioan ticket will show up on American records and result in license termination. Even if your state is not part of the system you could be arrested when back in Ontario -- Canadian police do not need probable cause to check license plate numbers.
