If you are an AMERICAN citizen, you need a passport to FLY to and from Canada. You do not need a pssport for LAND or SEA travel to and from Canada until after SUMMER 2008. See website below and read the top half of the page CAREFULLY to get the CURRENT info.

If a citizen of US, Canada, or Mexico and traveling by land into Canada, US, or Mexico:
- - BEFORE 31 December 2007, you need proof of citizenship (which may be passport, birth certificate, and/or naturalization papers) AND photo ID (which may be passport, Us or Canada driver's license, or military ID).
- - AFTER 01 January 2008, you *may* need a passport to enter Canada (even though you probably don't need one to enter US or Mexico until sometime around June 2008, due to issues with passport processing volumes).

If you are a citizen of another country (which includes those who are permanent residents of Canada, US, or Mexico), you will be required to present your passport AND permanent residency documentation (green card) to enter any of the three countries. Depending on your nationality (defined by the nation issuing the passport tied to the green card), you may ALSO require a visa to enter Canada or Mexico.

not yet bring a Birth certificate Photo ID ;speeds are in Metric so 80kmh is the same as 50mph Gasoline is sold in Liters regular is around $1.02 Can which is about $1.11 US at the moment so about $4.20 US a US Gallon you might wanna cross with a full tank, other than that driving should be similar, have a great trip

A legal citizen of where?
In any case, if you are driving into Canada from the US, all you need (until the end of the year) is photo ID, and your birth certificate. But you need a passport to get back into the US, even if you are a legal citizen.
