Passport to get into canada?

do you need to have a passport to get into canada if you are driving?? what are the laws now? i knew they were passing a law that now you had to have one, but i heard that because of the excessive amount of time it was taking to issue passports that they have extended the date.

i am planning to drive to canada in two weeks, do i need a passport?

Case 1: US or Canadian citizen traveling by air.
You must have a passport, effective 01 January 2007.

Case 2: US or Canadian citizen traveling by land or sea.
- Before 31 December 2007, only require proof of citizenship (birth certificate, passport, and/or naturalization papers) AND photo ID (passport, US or Canadian driver's license, or military ID).
- After 01 January 2008, passport is required.

Case 3: Not a US or Canadian citizen.
Must have passport, regardless of what mode of travel (land, sea, or air).

Note that the officials at any international border reserve the right to REQUIRE a passport as documentation, regardless of what the official ruling is. They are in charge of the crossing; if they ask for it and you can't produce it, they WILL turn you away.

Crossed into Canada two weeks ago at Pidgeon River along the Lake Superior shoreline. Myself and my two boys 14 and 12. I didn't bring my passport along but I brought my two children's passports. I had no problem with crossing as I just used my drivers license. Going into Canada they asked for identification papers for my kids. You do not need the passports yet but you would need a birth certificate for the children. We all had traveled overseas last year and had the passports already so I used them. It made it a lot easier in my opinion going through both ways and next time I will bring mine even if not required. But , again you do not need a passport to get through as you are driving. If you were flying you would need one. I love Canada, tis beautiful.

Not until January 2008.

Right now a drivers licence will be ok

No, you do NOT need a passport to drive into Canada, or back to the US until January of 2008. You DO need a government-issued photo ID such as a driver's license.

A passport may speed up the time of your questioning, but no you don't currently need one. You will eventually need one to re-enter the US, so you should submit your application ASAP.

i recently crossed US-Canada border via road in April2007. nobody checked or asked for anything when I was entering Canada from US. But on my way back to US from Canada, US officials asked me few questions and asked for my passport. Just because I had US passport, I did not have to waste my time.
so you can exit US easily, but cannot enter without a passport. why to take a risk then?
