American and Canadian Citizens can still cross the boarder with a birth Certificate and a drivers license. This year the rules changed so that you need a passport IF you are flying.

Sometime next year the rule changes so that you need a passport for all travel.

You can still drive into Canada without a passport. But make sure you have your birth certificate/drivers' license with you.

If you are an American by birth Make sure you have a drivers licence and your birth certificate. If you are an alien bring your green card. If you are a naturalized citizen bring your naturalized papers

If flying and you are a US or Canadian citizen, you require a passport (to return to the US, not to get into Canada). This went into effect as of January 2007.

If traveling by sea or surface before the end of December 2007 and you are a US or Canadian citizen, you need to have valid photo ID (military ID, driver's license, or passport are the only choices) AND proof of citizenship (passport or birth certificate are only choices). If you are a resident alien and/or naturalized citizen, you need to take the appropriate documentation to prove your status.

If you are not a US or Canadian citizen, you MUST have a passport regardless of the mode of transportation. You must ALSO have a valid (travel) visa.

This is the 'simple' version of the points laid out by both USCIS (US Customs and Immigration Services) and CCI (Canada Customs and Immigration).

You need a passport to fly in. But if you are driving in, you need at least a birth certificate issued by U.S. or Canada.

you can drive across the border with a birth cert & photo id...they are planning to change that in the fall....

I still think you'll need a Passport now...-or SOME kind of special "pass" that allows daily workers to cross. Look into it further- and see about getting that Passport- soon...
