People say Canada is cheap compare to the US. So why do Canadians complain about taxes? |

Canada is cheap because of the currency exchange. I'm not sure what it is right now, but when I was up there Canada was roughly 25% off. It's the same reason Europe is much more expensive now than in past years. However, to the people living there they are still paying and making the same amount of money, a great deal of which is going to taxes. So, Americans and Europeans think Canada is cheap because their money goes much further. |

taxes are set by government. Prices are set by markets (aside from sales tax). You can like the food in cafeteria, but complain about tough exams, right? |

Canada is no cheaper than in the US. We get about the same salary and things cost the same (earning C$ spend C$). Our taxes are higher than American taxes. But that is because we get more services from our Government. Whether those services are worth the taxes, that's another question.
We have 2 government pension plans, 1 unemployment insurance plan, medicare, weather service, national television, and others I won't mention here... |

1) You've got to account for the exchange rate.
2) Tourists can get the GST tax back. Canadians can't. Thus Canada is cheap for American tourists. |

Where did you hear Canada's cheap? The taxes in Canada are the highest out of the G8 (The top western economies). But it does have it's benefits. |

Absolutley nothing cheap here in Canada.
Gas prices at record levels. Income taxes are outrages. Utilities are sky rocketing.
Our Canadian dollar is closing in on par levels wth the US dollar at 0.91 cents now.
Health care maybe....Other than that. Not much else worth coming here for. Crime? Shootings everyday now in Toronto. |

Americans say Canada is cheap because every American dollar they spend here (until recently) bought 15% more as 85 cents US bought one Canadian dollar. Canadians complain about it being expensive because they look at how low Americans are taxed without understanding that there are 350,000,000 Americans to spread the tax load among vs 35,000,000 Canadians.
Don't let post one fool you - national health care does cost - but it is cheaper for us to deliver than down in the US, and in Canada NOBODY will lose their house or their life savings to the medical system. My American friend (in her 50's) from Georgia asked me about my medical system - and then told me it would cost her and her husband EACH $1,000 US PER MONTH to have the same medical care that I get for my tax dollars. Hmmmm...I don't pay $12,000 a year more in taxes than an American does in the states, so it is better.
Also, Canadians complain about taxes because they have never lived in the UK (I did for a year - taxes are totally out of line!).
Hope this helps put things in persepctive! |
