Places to live in or outside of Vancouver, Canada? |
I'm currently studying towards becoming a chartered building surveyor in the UK, and am looking to move across the pond to Canada which I believe to be the most beautiful place on earth.
Vancouver has appealed to me and my girlfriend; a great busy city with lots of construction opportunities, with beautiful forests, mountains and lakes close by.
Could anybody recommend places to live in or within an hours drive of Vancouver? I'd like to be close enough to travel for work in the city, but live somewhere slightly more recluse within the nature.
Any help would be appriciated. Additional Details Once i'm a chartered surveyor I will ba part of a worldwide body called RICS, meaning that immigating to Canada is alot easier. I have spoken to RICS Canada and they tell me it is a very sought after high end constrauction skill. |

Vancouver Island is a lovely place! :D I went there for a trip last year and I'm heading back there again in a month because I love it over there so much. Victoria is so beautiful, so is Ladysmith. Maybe even Nanaimo. :D The travel to Vancouver may become a little tedious, because you would have to take a boat ride there everyday, but it's definitely a site to see :D |

Before looking for places to live, you have to go through the immigration process. Most people get into Canada because they have skills that are in high need here (doctors, nurses, pharmacists, engineers). Unless you're already a citizen, you just can't move to Canada. It's a difficult process. Take a look at this website and research, research, research. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/index.asp
Also, most immigrant want to live in Vancouver, Toronto, or Montreal. This may actually hinder you if you want to move here. Good luck. |

Abbotsford or Chilliwack would be your best options |

If you working in Van and want to commute you won't get far within an hour drive due to rush hour traffic. Personally I would suggest the UBC area (Vancouver West), North Van, or West Van. However they are expensive areas, for lower costs Simon Fraser University has a very good community at the top of Burnaby mountain (the community is called UniverCity). Other than that, you probably have to go east of Langley (but I don't think you'll get to really experience the "vancouver" lifestyle in there, as it's a different landscape and lifestyle). |

No one has suggested Squamish -- the outdoor recreation capital of Canada. Squamish is located between Vancouver and Whistler (ski resort). While Squamish is becoming gentrified, it still retains a lot of the charm of a small town. |

There are lots of nice neighbourhoods around Vancouver, and most of them aren't very far from natural areas. Deciding where to live often depends on where you can afford to live, and where you work. However, you're putting the cart before the horse. It might take several years to be able to immigrate to Canada, if you're accepted at all. I would start on that first and think about where to live after you're here and have a job |

A lot of people are saying Abbotsford, Chilliwack and even Hope. Unless you want to be commuting 4-5 hours a day forget it!
The best is Surrey which is about 45-60 minute drive on average. Surrey is the 12th largest city in Canada and has a diverse multi cultural society. It has everything form a not so nice neighbourhood to some fabulous ones. It has affordable town houses and condominions.
It has an aggressive Mayor and council that is moving the city forward very fast. It has a new campus of Simon Fraser Univsersity.
Here is a web link, look it over as it has lots to offer.

Vancouver is a great city, but it's really expensive to live in by our standards. Less expensive nearby places are Chilliwack and Hope, both a bit of a drive (an hour or less) but you'll never get tired of the scenery! |

Everyone will tell you Vancouver is expensive, and it can be, but considering that you're coming from the UK, you may find it rather inexpensive. Any of the surrounding suburbs will be a little cheaper than Vancouver proper, and possibly more suitable to you. I live in Burnaby, which borders Vancouver to the east, and it's close to everything. A Skytrain ride to Downtown Vancouver takes 15 minutes, and driving takes just a fraction more, depending on traffic (even in the busiest traffic, I can drive home in a half hour). |
