Public transit maps for Vancouver, BC? Where to find or purchase? |
Three of us plan to visit on last weekend, late July. What is your experience using public transit? We had planned to buy the one day pass but is bus & Sky Train and Sea Bus service from a hotel the downtown area accessible and frequent enough to make it worth buying? This is info I have, so far.
http://www.vancouver.hm/transpor.html Additional Details Sorry, I had more than one question. We really need to know if it's possible to see Vancouver if we leave our car parked in hotel garage. |

yeah its pretty good. however, i find it on a bit of the expensive side. if your looking for a public transit map go the the vancouver public library. their usually near a huge pile of newspapers and magazines. the transit maps are FREE! if you wanna save yourself a trip here is a the offical vancouver tansit site...
http://www.translink.bc.ca/default.asp
you should find everything you need there. if you want to know how to get to places go to "trip planner" and it should show you which bus you want to take, and where you need to stop. if you feel lost ask the bus driver. their USUALLY friendly and willing to help.
yes, it should be possible to see vancouver if your car is parked in the hotel garage. all the popular tourist spots are mainly in downtown, or close to downtown. however, think about what time you are getting bak, or where you are going before you leave your car in the garage. there are some shady spots in vancouver.
eg: downtown east side
^you don't wanna be there at night. |

Here is a better link for you. Lots of stuff you can plan routes and find buses from in it. SkyTrain leaves every 8 minutes, and sea bus leaves every 30 minutes (12 minutes to cross) You can definitely see lots by transit. It is more a matter of getting a hotel located conveniently close to the routes.
I make frequent trips some for business and pleasure to Vancouver. Especially for downtown, I do exactly that - leave the car at the hotel. Downtown itself I either walk, or a short cab. Far easier and cheaper than driving a short distance then searching for pay parking. |

Public transit is great! Yes, it is worth buying a one day pass. But if there's 3 of you...why not rent a car? It would help if we know where you plan on going... |

I find the transit to be pretty decent here. Especially compared to some other places I've been! But I guess it's all relative, because there are better transit systems than here too.
I saw a transit map for sale at a store yesterday, and for the life of me I can't remember where it was. Might had been 7-11. Anyways, you can call 604-953-3333 From about 6 or 7am until 11 or 11:30 pm and get someone who will give you detailed transit instructions. (you may have to press "0" at the menu for a person). I find this to be much simpler than using a schedule or a transit map. You can get automated help at this number 24/7. You can get schedules at any public library in Vancouver or probably the lower mainland (greater Vancouver area). |

go to the public library main branch at Robson & Homer on your first day to pick up all the bus maps and schedules or use the translink wedsite above.
Vancouverites are pretty friendly (as long as you are not asking us for change)... if you ask us where to catch a certain bus if we know we will tell you....
as for parking at a hotel... if you are staying there they will have a special rate for you ... if not, you will have to check with the individual hotels for rates
oh and
One day passes are a GREAT VALUE!! make sure you get them! |

Yes its highly accessible, but I have to warn you, though transit is somewhat convenient, its highly inefficient compared to a car. A car is at least twice the speed of any commuting that doesn't involve the sky train. |

You do not need a car in Vancouver. I live in Vancouver and I rarely use a car. Parking especially downtown can be hard to find and expensive. If you are visiting mainly tourist areas, there are plenty of buses that service them.
The day passes are a really good buy, the site www.translink.bc.ca also has maps and trip planners to help you plan your trip. |
