Canada has existed as a nation in its present form only from 1949 when Newfoundland was forced to become the 10th province of Canada.

Canada has arguably been an independent nation only since 1982 when the constitution was repatriated from the UK by the Constitution Act.

Prior to that time Canada did not actually have a constitution but only the British North America Act of 1867.

Since the Canadian people had no legal right to change their own constitution and could only do so by first going to the British Parliament they could not reasonably be considered independent until that situation changed.

However, Canadians don't like being reminded that they were a colony in all but name until only 25 years ago and therefore pretend that the effective date of the British North America Act, July 1, 1867, marks the birth of their nation.

Better late than never I suppose.

NB: If you don't want to be "technical" about it then Canada has existed since some 35,000 years ago when the ancestors of its indigenous people crossed the Bering land bridge from Asia.

"Stop Canada" I know whats happening to the natives in Canada - free housing, free medical including dental, free post secondary education, they pay no federal, provincial, municipal or sales taxes, they pay about 60 cents a litre for gas and the rest of us pay about $1.20 a litre.

They drive $40,000 + new pick up trucks, live in houses on the reserves that would sell for upwards of half a mil in the city, and their kids all wear sports jerseys that sell for $128 a pop and the most expensive shoes you can buy --

They have ATV's, motor homes, fifth wheels, ski do's, power boats and some pretty hot cars as well as the pick up trucks.

But thats just the two dozen or so reserves I have been to in Western Canada.

They receive billions in Government funding given to them every year, plus treaty money. Then we have the "native fisheries" which means they get to "fish first".

We have the land claims which for some reason seem to always involve developed land, like ski resorts, ale and ocean resorts, suburbs of cities, industrial areas, ranches etc.

We have "dry" reserves in Canada which means no alcohol or drugs and those reserves are doing very well.

The band in Kamloops, the one in Comox come to mind, maybe Whispering Pines, etc., who have "gone dry" and have developed their own subdivisions, their own industrial parks, their own schools -

You dont hear much from them because they arent covering their faces and barracading highways and burning peoples houses, and shooting at white people and the RCMP.

In terms of what indians can do if they really wanted to, the Saskatchewan Confederated Indian College comes to mind.

It is packed with indians WANTING to go to college and get jobs, and most of their graduating class have jobs BEFORE they even graduate. There are some really great Indian people working there, running it.

I know some great indian journalists, entertainers, lawyers, doctors, teachers, RCMP officers, band police officers, nurses, mill supervisors, and more than a few who are the head of nursing, social workers, etc etc Hard working decent people.

Then there are those who want to drink, do drugs, sit on the reserves and cry genocide and prejudice.

I know one very small town, 2500 people, surrounded by four reserves, not DRY reserves, and it has THREE liquor stores. Make you think doesnt it? Well maybe anyone but you that is ........

Rillfane's answer is the best except that we have only been in our present state since 1999 when Nunavut became a territory. So, technically, the answer is 8 years last April 1st.

July 1st refers to the birthday of Confederation, when Canada became a country (even though we were still dependent of the British). It happened in 1867 and we just celebrated 140 years of Canadaness :)

In what aspect to you measure the age of a nation? As a Dominion or Commonwealth or Combined? Do you go back as far as when Canada was ruled by France?

Give a time line for your question.
