Question from UK - my partner wants us to move to Canada - where is the warmest, or least cold?!? |
I really really feel the cold in England and I'm scared, because I have a medical condition. Is it really freezing in Canada? I would love to be a strong outdoors kind of person but I'm not! |

By far the warmest place in Canada is right here in BC. I live in Vancouver, and the last few weeks notwithstanding, you hardly even know you're in Canada (I'm from the US originally). We VERY rarely go below freezing, even during the winter. In the last few weeks we got about three feet of snow, but it's the first time we've had that much snow since the 70s. We even have palm trees here in Vancouver. Granted, not big ones... more like palm bushes, but we've got them. If you're gonna move here, I'd suggest moving to Richmond or Burnaby, two nearby suburbs that are a lot cheaper to live in than Vancouver itself.
But if you really want great weather, you want to go to Vancouver Island, which is different from the city Vancouver. Check out cities like Victoria and Nanaimo. The weather on the island is the warmest it gets in Canada, its almost tropical. The biggest downside to Vancouver itself is the rain, and the Island gets much, much, much less rain. Of course, it's also an island, and you're stuck using the ferries if you wanna get off it, but it might be worth it to you if you want the great weather. |

"Hi"....not to argue with my esteemed fellow Answerer's and good countrymen but it actually is Victoria B.C. on Vancouver Island !
They don't get the topographical effect of the Coastal Mountains so it's warmer on average and rains much, much, much, less than Vancouver ! *S*
Some spots in the Interior of B.C. are blistering hot in the summer and freezing cold in the winter but not Victoria.
Here's some Victoria info and scroll down for the info as regards the climate.........( which is wonderful )

Glad to help and a "Welcome" to Canada when all the paperwork is done ! *S* (Michael C...) |

I agree, Vancouver, B.C. is likely your best bet. It is typically very mild - and rainy too, so you should be right at home! :) It is also a very beautiful city right on the ocean with lovely mountain vistas and very close to some absolutely stunning mountain areas. |

Victoria would be your best bet for warmer weather and not as much rain as further up island or Vancouver itself. Of course it depends on what you mean by cold. Here in the interior of BC it has been +10C but tonight it has dropped to -2C, and they say only +2C for tomorrow morning. We had a spell of really cold weather, which is unusual for us. Usually my annual flowers just winter over and come back in the spring. Ours is a semi arid climate.
You have to also figure out where there are jobs that you are able to fill. In BC we need medical personnel, but employment opportunities are way down in Canada right now. |

Parts of Canada are freezing - especially in the winter - but parts of Canada are relatively mild all year round. The West Coast - in particular Vancouver island - is quite temperate. And Victoria is known as a 'little bit of old England' so you wouldn't feel out of place. |

The weather in Canada is better than in the U.K...Its not that cold in Vancouver...rarely goes under -2...and can go up to about 30 degrees. It's fun stuff |

Vancouver's climate is unusually temperate by Canadian standards; after Victoria , it is the second warmest major city in Canada during the winter.Summer months are generally sunny and dry and temperatures moderate.Spring and autumn are usually showery. Rainfall is frequent, along with grey skies, in winter. Snow is typical in the surrounding mountains but less common at sea level. |

yep, Southern B.C. is your best bet. Stay away from the maritimes or the pairies!
Generally though, Canada is colder in the winter and MUCH hotter during the summer months than the UK - I know a girl who came to Toronto from Scotland and was shocked by how warm it was in the summer, she wasn't used to it at all. |

If you're not interested in the West Coast, Windsor, Ontario has mild winters and hot summers.
Victoria is probably nicer though. But south of Windsor has some nice areas near Lake Erie. |

Yes it is cold in Canada, you get snow and sub zero temperatures everywhere. It is least cold in South Western British Columbia. The rest of the country is jealous of them for several months of the year. |

As a resident of southern Vancouver Island (far west coast of Canada) I would have to say that this is the most agreeable climate in the country. Winters here are damp and dreary but we typically get minimal snow or temperatures which dip below freezing. (OK, this winter was an exception) Summers, which awaken in early May, are warm enough to grow such semi-tropicals as figs, and kiwi fruit. Our beaches are beautiful and expansive, and the air is clean and fresh! With 2 major port cities on the island you would never have to leave here, but beautiful Vancouver is only a 1 1/2 hour ferry ride. And we also have excellent medical facilities. |

If you dress for the weather, you will be fine.
As far as moving to Canada is concerned, if you have a medical condition, you may not be permitted to move here. |

After Russia, Canada is the world's second coldest country. While Vancouver is indeed the most temperate major city in Canada for most months of the year, even Vancouver drops to freezing for a number weeks each winter. (In the winter of 2008, as it happens, the city has already experienced several weeks of snowfall in the city center, which is unusual.) And how cold a place feels is not merely a function of its temperature, of course, but also of its dampness. Vancouver, Canada's warmest city, is also one of its wettest, so the climate there can feel a bit raw and dank. I live in Vancouver and would not say that it is "really freezing" here, but you might. |
