Question from the UK. Why doesn't Canada go for full independence from the UK. What's stopping it?

We are independent. The relationship between Canada and Britain is purely a symbolic one, in return for our independence.

Bill B
Canada indeed has been an independant member of
the commonwealth for a long time.National affection for
Her Majesty is the best I can say as to why she remains our head of state and is represented here by a governor general appointed by our sitting government.

I thought Canada was its own independent nation?

David H
We actually became a soveign nation in 1867 when were went through Confederation, and in 1982 the Queen signed the Canadan constitution, we are independent, but still maintain a place in the British Commonwealth.

We have a Governor General, and no longer have to ask the Queen for permission to dissolve Parliment for elections, we have just maintained close teis with the UK and have the Quen on our money as she is till the symbolic head of the country, not the constitutional one.

canada is independant from the UK, we recognize the monarchy as a symbol of our heritage and those that first settle our nation. its not like the queen is our ruler, we make our own laws and freedoms and such. maybe read a book or check out this subject on the web for more accurate dates and info on our independance

We are a fully independent nation. We remain in the Commonwealth and have a Governor-General in respect to our British heritage

We don't have any ties to Britain, the queen of Canada just happens to be the queen of England also.

We broke from the commonwealth in the 60's, or so I thought?
