The Alberta province spends about $250,000 a year for staff to patrol the Saskatchewan boundary and check grain shipments. Since 1950, Alberta Agriculture has supervised and co-ordinated a rural-based Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus) control program that has essentially kept the province rat-free. It's not as critical on the other side of Alberta, where the Rocky Mountains form an effective barrier to any rodents on the move from British Columbia. In other provinces, the rodents are fashionable pets and popular with teens. But Alberta's status as a rat-free zone has been staunchly defended for more than 50 years

Under Alberta's Agricultural Pest Act, anyone found to be raising or harbouring rats could face a maximum $5,000 fine or 60 days in jail.

To answer your question: Alberta makes every effort to ensure that the province stays rat free. You can ease your mind now - no rats.

Hope this answers your question.

Thankfully there aren't any that are known about. If a farmer near the border sees a rat they report it and they try to get rid of all rats in the area.

Even pet rats are illegal here. I have never seen a live rat. It's just another reason I love living here.

As other posters have indicated, huge efforts are made to keep Alberta rat free. That does not necessarily mean that there are absolutely no rats, but there are certainly not many. Their control measures have been very effective.

There are no rats in Alberta because we have had a border rat patrol syatem in place for many years to make sure they never get here.If someone tries to bring one in they can be heavily fined or even go to jail because of it.We have been rat free for almost a hundred years and plan to keep it that way.

Alberta has a rat patrol at the border. There are no rats in Alberta. Except maybe in a lab somewhere.

ATLROX

There are rats in Alberta, just like there are rats in other parts of the country and world. They're just not as commonly found as mice or other creatures because of the pest controls the others mentioned. It is illegal to buy rats as pets in Alberta, but you can still have them and they make great pets. Same as turtles, it's illegal to buy turtles in Alberta but people still have them. I have both and have never gotten in trouble or anything.
