Relocating to Vancouver or Owen Sound Ontario? ?

Currently live in Ontario. Have 2 good job opportunities but in completely different locations. Which communities are best to raise a family within a 20-30 commute to Vancouver? Any thoughts on Owen Sound for young children? Schools, recreation ect...

I'd pick Vancouver over Owen Sound in a heartbeat. Vancouver and area is very diverse and interesting with everything you could ever need. Owen Sound is very small town with no diversity at all and doesn't have a fraction of the opportunities you will find in Vancouver and B.C. generally.

As a mother if I had to choose a place between those two to raise my kids it would be no contest. I would love for my kids to experience all that B.C. has to offer.

If I had my choice I would pick the Vancouver area. I grew up not too far from Owen Sound and there is limited shopping and not a lot of selection of anything or much to do. There won't be a lot of choices for schools either. It can get pretty boring and you have a long drive to the city for a break and to shop.

B.C. and Vancouver have so much to offer and B.C. is the most beautiful province in Canada. There are lots of different communities surrounding Vancouver to choose from. You are close to the Pacific Ocean and of course one of the most fabulous mountain ranges in the world. Generally most people have a very healthy lifestyle out in that area as well and there are so many things for kids to do. The sky's the limit if you are close to Vancouver and everything would be accessible if you are that close (unlike Owen Sound).

I have spent a lot of time in B.C. and Vancouver as well because I have family there so I'm in a good position to compare the two.

Good luck wherever you end up! :)

I see Owen Sound more as cottage country.
If you go to Vancouver you'll have more opportunity for other work if something happens to your job.

vancouver has really nice areas, 20 30 minutes commute to vancouver? do you mean downtown vancouvers HUGE. burnaby is the best place to live its right next to vancouver, practically vancouver as they're so close. umm north burnaby is you're best bet. or just live in vancouver residential areas like kitsilano, point grey, north van, yeaa

That's quite a choice. I'd pick Owen Sound unless you really want to get away from winter. I don't want to live in big cities any more. Vancouver is going to cost you an arm and a leg for housing compared to Owen Sound, especially if you buy. Unless the Vancouver job pays enough that the difference in housing is made up for, Owen Sound would be better financially. I have a bunch of relatives in that area and it's a nice little place. Lots of good outdoor activities around, not all that far from TO if you need some city life. I live in BC and love it, but not in Van any more. Dave, above me, made a good point. Vancouver seems to have either short commutes, if you live fairly near the downtown core, or long ones if you have to cross the Fraser. Hwy 1 has huge traffic jams at commuting time.

Because of the fraser river, Burrard inlet etc, the re are very few 30 minute commutes.
It really depends on who you and your family are. Vancouver is "BIG CITY"and has earned a rep. as a big city. It's also a sea port. Lots of every nationality jammed ito a small area. This is both good and bad.
Owen sound is small town.
If I was raiseing a young family I'd go to Owen Sound.

I would say Owen Sounds is better for young children. Much smaller community with lots of schools and rec centres.
