Just a friend.

You really have two choices, either taking the 87 highway up through Albany and the Adirondacks, or the 91 highway up through Connecticut and Vermont into Canada. Both are great choices and have plenty too see and do. However I would go up one way and come back the other, then you don't have to choose. Highway 91 is a longer route, I would do that first and then come back by way of highway 87. |

87. Easy ride. The border crossing can be miserable. Stop where you like, everyone is different. |

From NYC, take 87 North to the border and follow the signs for Montreal. When you cross the Canadian border, you're not very far from Montreal. |

The shortest distance between two points is a straight line and lucky for you, I-87 draws almost a straight line between NYC and MTL. So, I would definitely recommend taking I-87. The trip up should take about 7-8 hours (of course depending on such factors as traffic and the border). As for places to stop, there are a few really cute towns. One south of Albany is New Paltz (small college town) and one north of Albany is Saratoga Springs (well known for the Saratoga Racing Track). Once you get north of Albany and Saratoga Springs, there will be some breathtaking views of the Adirondacks (so have your camera ready!). And of course Montreal will be beautiful too (so keep your camera in the ready stance)!
Another possiblity is to take Amtrak all of the way up. The ride is beautiful. South of Albany, you see the Hudson River and north of Albany, you see Lake Champlain and look across the way into Vermont. Now, even though the ride is beautiful and relatively inexpensive ($64), the train ride is time-consuming and seems to take forever. The ride is 10 hours without delay. Again, there are certain luxuries going by train but I don't know if the time aspect is worth it.
Hope you have a wonderful road trip and visit to Montreal! |
