I love the way you insist on capitalizing everything to try to add emphasis. It's like SHOUTING will make people believe the rhetoric more...

So what's the story here? Vancouver has been hit lately by a series of shootings. Essentially, rival gangs are fighting over turf and a dwindling supply of drugs because of a crackdown in Mexico.

I would not exactly call it Canada's Detroit. Heck, even Detroit is a nice place to live if you steer clear of the northeastern part of the city.

Every city goes through periods where crime spikes for some reason. A few years ago, Toronto had a number of gangland shootings. Several years ago, Montreal gangs were blowing each other up in cars.

The question is not what is in the news today, but rather how safe are these cities on the average each year. Compare Canadian cities violent crime rates per 100,000 people to other cities in the world, and then we should talk as to whether our cities are overrun with murderers, drug pushers, and rapists.

I've supplied Canada's official information for 2007 below, which was the most recent stats I found.

Metro Vancouver's homicide rate for 2008 was 140 people (a record for the city) for a population of 2.5 million people. That is 5.6 murders per 100,000. Houston is about the same size as Vancouver, and it's rate was around 16. And Detroit's rate is 46 murders per 100,000!

Hope that puts things a little more in perspective.

I thought Montreal is Canada's gangland.

Travel to Vancouver several times a year, with my young daughter. Never had a problem!

if your a gangster,,, sure be afraid. there is a bit of competition going on right now;;;

seems the mexicans arent delivering cocaine right now and so supply is tight.

if your not a gangsta.... or have a cocaine habit...

you'll be alright.

QUIT SPAMMING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Detroit was called "Murder City" many years ago. It has since been segregated to the back burner by the media and is no more dangerous than any other US city, and is statistically much safer than many. Vancouver certainly isn't without problems, and the gang activity is a big concern, but be realistic. If you're not involved in the drug trade or gang activities, you don't have much to worry about. Your chances of getting into a car accident on the freeway are 100's of times higher than getting shot by the Bacon brothers gang.

Rachel S
Actually every major city has gang problems, Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver it's all the same. Unless you associate yourself with those involved in organized crime you really don't have that much to worry about. The chances of being caught in a crossfire are very slim.

You can't live your life in fear either, if you do then what's the point?

KHALISTAN
Most of the shooting aren't really in Vanoucer in the past couple of days there have been 8 shooting and 5 were in Surrey so I think Vancouver is still safe and it is a little scary goin out at night nowadays

Look at the statistics. Vancouver is not a particularly crime-ridden city. I visit Vancouver when I can and there is no part of the city I fear walking through.

I live in this area and unless you live in the few skid row areas, the likely hood of winning a lottery are greater than being caught in a gangland shooting cross fire.

The odds of being hurt or killed in a motor vehicle accident in any city are greater than getting caught in any gang's cross fire.

You know what? Everywhere has crime and gangs so dont just target Vvancouver. I live in LA , im an american and ive travelled and seen every place in the US and some parts of Ontario canada , im goin to BC soon and I dont think its as bad as it is. I mean , you listen to the LA news and have preconceptions about the place , but its not always like that. Its a 50/50 situation.
