I recommend old Hull. HUGE difference in rent compared to across the river in Ottawa. Of course every city has some crime and every neighborhood has it's good and bad spots. I was living in Ottawa up until a few years ago...I rented a bachelor apartment there for 650$ a month. Now I'm paying $560 a month for a 2 bedroom and heat, hydro and cable are included. I have no complaints! Plenty of good hospitals in the area. If you drive, downtown Ottawa is a 10 minute drive away or you can hop on an STO bus and be there just as fast and you won't have to worry about parking.
Ottawa isn't high crime either but I've noticed they do seem to have alot of swarmings and gang related crimes happening lately. Very recently a man was stabbed on a bus which is quite alarming. I wouldn't recommend the bike over there paths either...can be very unsafe for women in particular.
I can't say much about the schools but this site may be useful to you. Best of luck!

Gatineau-Hull. I can practically spit on the Parliament Building I'm so close to it; rent is much cheaper--average for a 1 bedroom heat and light included is about 500-600$ a month. Schools in Quebec are great: I learned English and French and when I graduated I was a year ahead of my Ontario counterparts. Hospitals are decent (I especially like the Gatineau Memorial) and there are good social services, including subsidized daycare. Folks here tend to be Frenglish, so language is not usually a problem.
Plus, we just have more fun here. :D |

Definately would recommend the Gatineau-Hull area. Muuuuch cheaper rent compared to Ottawa and where I live you can literally walk to downtown Ottawa in 15-20 minutes. There's a great transit system that'll take you pretty much anywhere. Lots of schools to choose from, I went to one of them myself and can spell better than most of my friends who went to school in Ontario. LOL
As for NO crime whatsoever, when you find that place, let me know ! ;) |

You will want to live in the GATINEAU HILLS.
Towns: Chelsea, Old Chelsea, Wakefield (all in Quebec)
You can rent a house for the price of an apartment and it's only 20 minutes from downtown Ottawa.

Ottawa is not a very big city, so pretty much all suburban neighborhoods are within half an hour to 45 minutes via public transportation from downtown.
The Bayshore area (in Nepean, just west of Ottawa) has cheap apartments, and is right on the Transitway, which is this cool highway that is reserved only for buses (so no traffic!). The Ottawa Civic hospital is on your way to downtown along the Transitway.
Crime is not something that you need to worry about at all in Ottawa.
I unfortunately don't know much about schools in the city though :( |

NOT Gatineau-Hull. It may be cheap but it is not safe. Had my car broken into 4 times.
You have to watch ottawa, we seem to have pokects of ares that are cheap but run down. Overall Ottawa is cheaper than most cities in canada. |
