Shall I move to Vancouver or to Burlington in Ontario? |
Soon, my family and I will be moving to Canada. Friends are inviting us to join them in Vancouver (Burnaby or Richmond) but others insist that we join them in Burlington, Ontario. Any advice from anyone who knows these cities will be much appreciated. Based on my very limited knowledge about Canada, vancouver region seems to be more popular to immigrants because of its weather.
Considering job availability, education, living costs and quality of life, which city do you think is better? |

Welcome to Canada!
I emigrated here from the UK many years ago and it has been a great place to live and raise my family.
I wonder though, why you are considering just those two places. Vancouver is beautiful, but expensive and wet! Burlington is a suburb of Toronto.
Have you thought of one of the many smaller towns in Southern Ontario? I love the area where I live so much that I decided to build a website about it http://www.discover-southern-ontario.com There is info there about the cities and towns (London, Stratford, St Thomas, Brantford) some of the lovely, pretty villages in the area (Sparta, St Jacobs, Port Stanley).
In the smaller towns you can buy housing that is a lot cheaper than those massive cities.
In St Thomas, where I live, it is still possible to buy a detached new house with a garage for under $200,000 Canadian dollars which is about £100,000 and an older home in a more mature area would cost even less.
My son bought a house a couple of years ago when he was 26 for $99,000 and it is a duplex, which means that there is a 2-bedroom apartment downstairs and a 1-bedroom apartment upstairs, so he has income coming in - all that for $99,000 (might be worth $115,000 now)
Good Luck with your move! |

If it's the choice between these two, I would pick Burnaby or Richmond. Note tthat Burnaby, and Richmond are suburbs of Vancouver, while Burlington is a suburb of Toronto.
However, if you're thinking you'll be living in the city in any of these cases...you're not. Both are half an hour away from the city. I would choose Vancouver as the weather is milder, however Toronto is a more diverse and important city than Vancouver.
Should you choose Toronto, moving to Oakville is better than Burlington as a suburb. It's closer; better education, and higher quality of life. It's a "town" of 120 000; incredably safe place to life. The path of going to Toronto from Burlington is like this....
Burlington, then Oakville, Missisauga, Etobicoke, then Toronto. Each city takes about 5 minutes to drive through on the highway. So you see, you won't really be living in Toronto, but the city is right there. |

I think you should check out craigslist for vancouver and burlington; you would have an idea of cost of living and employment. Vancouver is beautiful but thats it, its expensive to live here, there is no night life well not as much as the east coast. with 99000 dollars you cant even start a convenient store, to purchase a one bedroom apartment in Burnaby right now you need about 250 k, at least it will be a little less in Richmond though. The only benefit you get from living in Van is the scenery and also with everything being so close to you.... for example in one day I can go to the beach to fresh water lakes to the ski hills and down town for a night out, and thats only because all those places are only 30 minutes away... and also if your not multicultural you better become one cuz we got every nationality you can think of...from the east to the west they are all in BC...
plus we've got the BC BUD |

Here's the rub:
The people in Burlington want you to move there because they're bored to death. It's not even Toronto. It's not even a suburb of Toronto.
The people in Vancouver, on the other hand, love their city so much and they want you to get even just a glimpse of that.
Honestly, there's no comparison.
Why anyone could possibly choose Burlington over Vancouver is way beyond me.
I'm sure there are reasons. I just can't think of any.
Well, regarding weather.
Vancouver is a much more mild climate than most of the rest of Canada. It does rain a lot though, so you have to be prepared for that.
In Burlington, if it rains, people duck for cover and just stand there waiting for the rain to stop.
In Vancouver when it rains, nothing changes. It's going to be raining for a couple days nonstop.
I always thought Toronto was tops with immigrants, but what do I know? |

I would say Vancouver because it has nicer weather and it's a beautiful place to live. The houseing is expensive though. If your not used to freezing cold winters, you'll have a hard time in Toronto. |

I have lived in Toronto and Richmond.
Richmond is by far and away the better place to live. People who live in Richmond live longer than any place else in BC and that is a proven scientific fact.
While Burlington and Toronto and the surrounding areas do have their strong points, Richmond is fabulous because of the lifestyle. Lots of parks, Steveston Village, access to great shopping and good restaurants and close to Vancouver. Recreation facilities are ample and the community spirit is alive and well. And the amazing sea air.
My favourite thing was to ride my bike on the dyke (about 15 kms long) in the summer in late afternoon - very popular for walking too.
Now I live in Kelowna and while I miss being away from the sea, I like the desert and the wineries and the beaches.
But Richmond would be the place for you to check out. |

The Winters in the Toronto area are extreme and to be avoided at all costs. |
