Should I buy travel insurance? |
I am flying from Toronto to Edmonton for about 5 days with Air Canada. Should I buy travel insurance - medical and/or cancellation insurance? I am 20 years old, and I am wondering if it is necessary if I am staying in Canada. I have never flown before so I was wondering if anyone had any advice. Thanks :) |

Travelers insurance should not be necessary for a trip that short and while staying in the same country. All your other insurance will cover you for everything except the cancellation fees. If you are still nervous about the fees find out what the insurance costs are, and then find out what the cancellation fee is. Compare and decide for yourself. But generally NO you don't need insurance. |

You know what, at your age, travel insurance is so cheap it would be stupid not to buy it. Your health plan is portable, but, rates are not exactly the same from one province to another, and Blue Cross travel pays for anything over and above. Blue Cross will cover ambulance and drugs that are not covered by by Ontario Health. Not to mention Ontario Health will pay for your bed in a 4-bed ward in Alberta, Blue Cross will put you in a semi-private room. .Air fare cancellation, while rarely used, is a godsend when you need it. If your house burns down the night before you go, or you get hit by a car, Air Canada doesn't care, but Blue Cross cancellation coverage will fix you up. |

Your medical plan should cover you for up to a certain number of days outside your province - certainly for 5 days. If you MOVED to Edmonton I believe you would be covered for 30 days - check Air Canada's website and see what their policies are regarding missed flights etc.
Medical Insurance above your Cdn medical plan is more for people traveling to the US or overseas.
Then its a neccessity - been there, done that, cost me close to $8000 Cdn on a recent trip to China - my company lied about having insurance for us. |

If you ever fly outside of the country, MAKE sure you have medical insurance. But not flying within Canada.
Cancellation insurance I find a bit of a joke. I fly a couple of times a year. Cancellation insurance the last time I checked it was about 10% of the ticket cost. So, if I paid, after about 10 trips I have saved enough that it would cost less than cancellation insurance. I think I have saved about 5 or 10 round tickets. Plus, the terms to rebook aren't usually that bad. IF you have to cancel, you usually can upgrade the ticket and use it at a later time. I have never used the medical insurance either. (Even once when I should have used it.) But it is good to have and the costs of getting sick in a foreign country could be endless. |

Absolutely not...Insurance is a scam...They are gambling that you will survive, you are gambling that you will die, and for that wild guess you are paying. Think about it.. |
