Should I move to Canada from the U.S.? |
I am considering moving to Canada after I graduate school. I lived there for 6 months to play hockey last year and have been in love with it ever since. I am going to school for fire science and plan on becoming a firefighter. How are the job opportunites up there for my field? How hard is it to legally move up there and eventually become a citizen? If anyone moved there from the U.S. or is a citizen has any information please let me know. Thanks |

I am a proud Canadian but my grand parents were American. If you have to ask, then maybe you shouldn't.
Remember, you are still in school. You meet girls and life does change.
There are a lot of good places in the USA near the Canadian border. Minnesota and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (Sault Ste. Marie), Washington state e.g. (Seattle, Bellingham). Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.
Minneapolis and St. Paul are very close to the lifestyle of Canada and really the lifestyle is much the same. They have hockey in Minnesota (Duluth too). Chicago, Detriot and Buffalo are so close to the border that the social interaction is very close. And they all have hockey teams at the junior level too.
As for being a firefighter. In Canada you would have to be a bonded person to get a job firefighting which means they look for citizens first..
There is a notable exception to this. Up here it is smart to have your paramedic courses complete if you wish a career in fire fighting. The emergency services need paramedics far more than any other occupation. I know of a couple of Americans in the Toronto Ambulance Services.
Many of the paramedics in many of the cities are also firemen. You would greatly enhance your chances at a fire department in Canada if you were also a fully or goodly accredited paramedic.
In addition to the paramedic, deliberately continue conversing with that hockey team you played with. Hockey is the core sport in Canada. Knowing how to play hockey and the desire to play hockey opens up a whole bunch of connections to jobs, to immigration services and a lot of sponsors. |

You Will need one of these........
1.) a job or job offer.
2.)a relative.
3.)a trade or career that's in demand.
It's along process, I moved here from the UK and have a trade but it can take about two years.
Apply through the correct channels and don't give up,I think it's the best country in the world. Good Luck . |

I don't know about job prospects but it is quite easy to become a landed immigrant/permanent resident (equivalent to a green card) if you already have a job offer or meet a certain number of points in the immigration point criteria (your age+education should be a big plus). I moved in 2001 from the US and became a permananet resident in just over a year and a bit. Citizenship takes approximately 3 years more. |
