Driving your own car will undoubtedly be cheaper, unless you own a Hummer and you're gonna rent a hybrid.
There will be an extra charge on your credit card to use it up here, even if it's just using it to withdraw from an ATM. I don't know what the other guy means about hotels not accepting cash, I've paid with cash in plenty of Canadian hotels. Of course that is Canadian cash, not American cash, but that goes without saying (I hope). Just get your money changed when you cross over. Your best bet is to look for some small gas station or something right before you cross the border, or some small shop just on the other side to change your money. If you change it right at the border, you'll pay more in fees. |

No reason to rent a car if you have a car and don't mind driving. You're more comfortable with a vehicle you are familiar with and your insurance is already paid for.
Yes, use your credit card. Credit cards work exactly the same in Canada as they do in the US. You don't want to travel with wads of cash when a bit of plastic will do the same job for you - and give you a record of your expenditures. |

It will be way cheaper to just drive your own car....and yes, you can use your credit cards in Canada... |

I'd suggest drive, if the car is comfortable for five. I'd also check the weather for the trip.
and you can withdraw Canadian $$ from your account with a credit card linked to your accounts. |

I agree with the others; drive you own car and split the gas; way cheaper than renting and getting insurance through a car company with all their fees.
Now having worked in a bed & breakfast in Montreal for a while, I can tell you that tourists often have their cars broken into up here if they park outside downtown and leave ANYTHING valuable in the car. I would never have known this because I've never had a local tell me, but tourists have reported it at least 10 times this summer.
Your credit card company can tell you what fees are incurred when you use it internationally; it would be helpful to withdraw cash and change it in the states if only to avoid fees up here, as not all places accept credit cards (most will, but not little shops or restaurants sometimes). You can end up paying huge fees if your card has those restrictions, but just check first. It's always safer to have a little cash on hand for emergencies, but don't carry too much; if anything happens to it you don't want to lose a huge lump sum all at once.
Have a great time - Montreal's a fantastic city :) |

American car rental companies won't let their vehicles be removed from the USA, period. So forget that idea.
Hotels in Canada will NOT accept cash for a room rental.
Your US credit card will be accepted in Canada, and yes you will have to pay a small fee on each transaction, to the credit card issuer.
If you want/need Canadian currency, go to any ATM and make a withdrawal from your bank account. You will get Canuck Bucks from the ATM here in Canada. What a surprise ?
