Should I use "Vous" or "Tu" in this circumstance?

My school is doing an exchange with a school in Québec, and we've all been matched with host families with students our age. My question is this: should I use tu right away when talking with my host student (and parents), or if not, for how long should I use vous?

Vous is used when it's (in general) someone you do not know/are not familiar with, or they are older.

However, I even use it with people who are younger and I do not know them, as it is polite.

Use tu for the kid and vous for the parents until they tell you it's OK to switch.
Vous is more respectful.

nadada
You should use vous at first when you contact them out of respect because you do not know them. They will more than likely tell you that you should use tu when they are comfortable.

vous is safe

No, you should not use 'tu' right away. in fact, when speaking with your host student's parents, you should always use 'vous' because they are older and it's a sign of respect.
How soon you switch to 'to' with your host student depends on how quickly you become friends. Let him/her give you the clue. When s/he starts to tutoyer you (that means using 'tu') then you are free to use 'tu' back.

In general, you use vous with older generations untill they tell you its OK to use tu, if that ever happens. You can use tu with people your own age right away.

Annie C
Use "tu" with anyone your own age, but it would be respectful to use "vous" with parents and such.
