dont forget Quebec joined confederaton on their own free will for one reason; to avoid being swallowed up by american expansion. Inside Canada their culture and language has been protected and extended across the country so that a francophone can have their trial in french and have federal government services in french anywhere in Canada. All manufacturers have to label their products french/english in the entire country. They get to have draconian language laws internally and get to have a unique civil copurt system.
If quebec seperate they would have rrenegotiate their trade agreements with NAFTA and WTO and rest of Canada. They would be lucky to get in at all but can forget about any demands that the rest of the continent needs to change their labelling or must have government services to preserve french for their mere 8 miilion people. They would be swallowed up commericially and cuturally in a greater North America, just what their founding fathers hope to avoid by joining Canada in the first place.
The PQ are really misleading Quebecers on what independence would mean (aside from losing $8 billion $$ in transfer payments) |

They'd be crazy if they did. They get a disproportionate amount of grants and funding from the Federal Government (based on population) and they'll lose all of that if they separated. They'd also be a mouse between two tigers. |

I say if they wanna go, let em. I for one am tired of listening to those whiny separatists anyway. |

If they want to, then yes. They should separate if only to stop many Canadians from pretending that they are all bilingual outside of Quebec. |

No, it's silly! I'm not entirely sure of exactly WHY they would like to do that even, but still, what's the point? Plus then wouldn't Quebec have to pay more taxes/etc.? |

Yes we should, if only because we don't have electrical switches that say "on" and "off". That's because we are so distinct we know when the power is "on"! |

Yes. We're different from the Rest of Canada. One thing that is pissing me off is that Canada made a new constitution in 1982, the Canadian Prime Minister negociating it with the PMs of the provinces... except Québec's. They all signed, but when Québec's PM (René Lévesque it was at this time) saw this, he went back to Quebec. There have been attemps to re-include Québec into the constitution, twice in fact, but PMs from other provinces refused to bring the changes to the constitution.
We're very different from every other provinces, and I stopped paying attention to the people calling us whiners and so on, because they obviously do not understand the situation.
Vive le Québec libre! |
