Should religious schools be publicly funded in Canada?

In recent decades, the question of publicly-funding denominational schools has been hotly contested, particularly in Ontario which (to my knowledge) is the only province in Canada that still operates Catholic boards purely on taxpayer money (Constitutional Act of 1867). Now for the record I am Catholic but I think given our current situation in Canada (which bills itself as a secular country) and especially in Ontario (which has one of the more culturally diverse populations in the country) some major reform is in order.

Ontario is now in the midst of a provincial election and once again the question of publicly-funding faith-based is at the fore of political debate. One candidate has proposed to extend public education funding to other faiths, while the incumbent has remained firm on keeping things the same. Of course others (including politicians, the public, and even the UN) are against any form of public funding for any denominational school board, including Catholic.
Additional Details
Of course this question is not limited to Ontario or Canadian residents.

No, I don't think they should be publicly funded. Just because they have been funded in the past, doesn't mean they should continue to be funded. Pierre Trudeau said "The government has no business in the bedrooms of the nation." Similarly, "The churches have no business in the public schools of the nation." I have no problem with denominational schools, but they should not be publicly funded.

My opinion is that public funded education should be non-denominational. In Scotland we have public funded Catholic schools and it is very divisive, a division which is life long and has lead to sectarianism in our society.

I believe that if parents want their children to be brought up in a certain faith, then they should arrange for faith teaching outwith school times.

Of course not... We make mistakes in the USA, but one thing we do right is Religion and State ought to be kept separate...

I agree with Imaka. Public funding should not include faith-based schools, and to support Catholic schools only, is highly discriminatory. Religion and learning should be kept separate.

It doesn't seem fair to help one child who has one faith and not another with a different faith.
In my opinion, if the government wants to help children with their education then they should all be helped equally.
Maybe this could best de done fairly by giving families with children in school an extra deduction on their income taxes, per child, or if they don't make enough money to pay taxes an equivalent allowance for each child. And, maybe if the parents are over a certain income level they don't need assistance.

NO to public funding of schools.

NO it is a way of fostering more bigots and discrimination and is a waste of tax payers money.

Hell No.

No, I do not think it's right to fund a religious school because not every Canadian can attend that school. Not all Canadians are catholic, or even christian. This is a rare case in which we haven't separated church from state, unlike the americans. (I laughed so hard when I read what that guy said about americans separating church from state...you guys don't allow gay marriage because it's an "abomination" and i'm sure "in God we trust" has nothing to do with religion)

Sure why not.
Canada is a multicultural country and people with different religions live in it.

NO absolutley not. i dont want anyone to take offence to this, but i do not want to pay for catholics to go to there own seperate schools. or any faith for that reason, everyone should go to public schools, or private schools if there willing ot pay. sending kids to seperate schools like that just hurts them cuz if you go to a cathlic or christain school there only around people like them, and if they go into the real world where not everyone is christian, and say they come across a gay person, they will only look at that person as a "sinner" because thats what they'vew learned in school and never got the chance to experiance different people and faths and cultures.

Well catholic schools when I went to them use to be private .Parents paid tuition ! Those who could not afford it went to public schools for high school after promary .

Catholic school already get public funding and have doen so for years now .It was around 87 or 88 when that occured !
It does not matter now what religion you are you can attend a catholic school . I personally rathered when it was private .

krustybedsheets
...for obvious historic and political reasons catholic school funding should remain intact in Ontario...lets not go any further though....what was the american bragging about?...america is god country - the president always babbling about his faith and the church is so powerfull in that country...remember the moral majority and the religious right?

Megegie
All schools have government funding. The issue right now is if they should be soley funded by governments.

Many religious school don't want this to happen because that would mean that the schools won't be allowed to hire religious teacher's only. They will be REQUIRED to hire non-believers too because being funded by the government 100% means that they MUST adhere to the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. One of those freedoms is freedom of religion which means that religious schools will no longer be allowed to not hire someone based on religiosity or lack there of.

In other words, a Catholic school will get in trouble for not hiring a more qualified teacher because they are, for example, an atheist or Jew. So if a Jew, for instance, is not hired he will be able to sue the school board and will more than likely win.

Vote Dalton McGuinty, give public schools a chance so that ALL children, regardless of creed, can have a great education. John Tory (how appropriate of a name lol) will make religious schools 100% government funded. Public schools will suffer and religious schools will HAVE to hire non-religious teachers/administration.

you are all colors
I think they should
