Something maple, for sure. Maple syrup is difficult to pack and it's heavy, so I would suggest a jar of maple butter, which you can spread on toast or pancakes(or eat it straight out of the jar as I do--very little of it makes it as far as the toast in my house), or some of the little maple-leaf shaped candies made of maple fudge. If you can find maple products in grocery stores, they're cheaper there than at 'tourist' places. They are available in all kinds of places, including at shops in most airports. If you like chocolate, she might try Neilsen's Jersey milk chocolate bars, from just about any grocery store. I send them to relatives in Europe because it's different from the chocolate there. Crispy Crunch bars are uniquely Canadian, they're a sort of crunchy peanut and chocolate bar. If your mum can find Ganong's 'Fruitfull' jellies, they are the best fruit jelly candy I've ever had--if she's going to the Alberta or BC, London Drugs usually has them. |

Eastern Canada has sugar maple trees, which are tapped in the spring to collect the sap and make maple sugar, maple taffy, and maple syrup.
Most souvenir shops and stores will have authentic maple sugar made in Quebec or Ontario, and they come in the shape of a maple leaf.
Since these trees are only native to Eastern a Canada and USA (although some reach as far south and west as Texas), it is the best place to get quality maple sugar treats.
If you don't want that, you can look into "bearpaws" which are like a larger version of "Turtles" (the caramel/chocolate/nuts candy)
I would say that if you were coming to Canada yourself, you should try the "Beaver Tail" confection, but you can't really carry that back on a plane. It is a pastry. Imagine a sweetened dough similar to a flattened donut or crumpet (but oblong not round) that has been deep fried, then you cover that in a favourite topping, such as apple/cinamon, chocolate & nuts, or caramel. It is served warm with lots of napkins! |

Reese's Peanut Butter Cups (made by Hershey) are fantastic, but have a ton of calories. Others you may like are Twizzlers and York peppermint patties. |
