hi! i am an attorney who had to research this for a client who had the misfortune of getting a dwi. the answer is YES that it can keep you from crossing the border. but they have to catch you crossing the border and have the resources to run your name. just like in the south, how can these guys nail everyone going across? they cant. where it will catch up to you is when you need a work permit or license to fish or whatever and you have to fill out a permit. BUT local officials have the discretion for a frickin FEE to make exceptions. wink wink yeah, you can get in and get the fishing permit for more money unless the locals are just anti-tourist/anti-money! also, i believe after 10 years you can apply for "reinstatement" with proper application and, you guessed it, proper fee!

I've heard this too. Check the Canadian Dept of tourism web site and they will be able to tell you more.

Legal Issues

Persons with felony convictions, driving while intoxicated records or other offenses may be denied admittance into Canada. Contact the Canadian embassy or nearest Canadian consulate before travel

i've gone to Canada several times and they have never asked that question. fuzz busters and guns are illegal to bring up to there from here.

Gopinch is right. We had a friend turned away at the Canadian border (coming in from ME) because of an old DWI.

Sorry...I'm blonde...whats a DWI?!

Basically, the answer is yes its true. But the chances are you will never get asked about past criminal history while border crossing as a visitor. I go every month across the border and have never been asked criminal questions. All they want to know is where your from, where your going, how long you will be staying, and if you are bringing in anything that needs to be declared. You shouldnt have any problems with a DWI ... no one will know anyway.

i believe that if you have been convicted of a crime, then you will have problems.

Likely would depend on the customs officer you get. To be on the safe side, you should call them first and see what the policy is.

fraservalleybob
True.

and it works both ways...
The Question does need to be asked AND answered first though. The tricky part is when you "Lie" and they have you in their data bank already for some (any reason) and they know the correct answer already.
