Beneath the city streets, visitors to Montreal can explore the
underground city. An enormous underground structure integrated into the city's major commercial districts.
It is known for being the largest underground complex in the world containing and linking to over 200 resturants. 1700 boutiques 30 movie theaters, hall, museums and hotels, all
connected to 10 of the city's subwaysystem. This unique feature has made people often refer to Montreal as "two cities in one" and can allow visitors to explore the city without
worrying about bad weather or lengthy travel time between
the city's shopping districts.

They have a HUGE underground shopping mall system. More like an underground downtown. But most of the city is still above ground.

Minneapolis is the Sky-way city. BTW.

Both for the same reason: Northern Winters

No it's not physically underground.
Montreal might have been referred to as the underground city because there is a gigantic network of malls underground in the downtown area. The downtown area has a street level and an underground level that has thousands of shops and restaurants and are all linked by connecting tunnels or metro (subway) stations.
If you wanted to you could go shopping and spend several days underground.

We do have an underground system but it's not the city. It's a huge connected Shopping Malls with Metros(Subway(Tube))

:)

I know that there is remains of a city that was unearthed from a long time ago in Montreal. There is a museum of it that you can go underground and see what they excavated.

well its not ALL underground. there are just the metros, malls, etc. it is called the biggest underground city in thre world because everywhere you need to go is accessible by the underground. so you don't really need to go outside.
its good for the hot summers or cold winters to stay in.
anyways, its really cool. you should visit it one day.

The "underground city" was named such after they opened their Subway System, it experienced a Major growth of shops and vendors when the city hosted "Expo 67" in 1967. Montreal was a truly vibrant city, full of Fashion, Artists, restaurants, and Boutiques, whether it remains so today is something I cannot answer. The actual City is and always has been above ground.
