I'm Canadian, but I've lived in the UK for more than ten years. What makes you think that life in Canada is so rosy? I can assure you that there are problems in Canada too. Not many people realise that there is serious hardcore American-style violence in the cities in Canada, a huge gang culture among the ethnic groups and many people struggle to live above the poverty line. Living in Canada can be great, don't get me wrong, if you have a lot of money. Also, it's not as easy as you might think to pick up and move there. You need to apply for residency from OUTSIDE Canada and then there is a points system that gets you in if you are lucky. You have a lot of research to do before you can make that move. Have you chosen a Province or city? Write me and I'll tell you more. |

Canada is a great place to live, and a ideal place to raise a family. As long as you stay out of certain suburbs of Toronto - there is basically no crime/violence. The worst thing to worry about here is drugs hands down. Although, I think that is something you can easily keep your kids away from.
I live just south of Toronto (niagara region) and I can't remember a day my family has locked the door to our home - I have never saw a handgun in public, nor do I know a single person who owns one.
Aside from that it is a beautiful country.
I for one feel extremely lucky to have been brought up here. |

I lived in Canada for 11 years. The place is amazing. Oh, indeed the Canadians keep whining for this and for that but they have no idea of what's going on in the world and how lucky they (we actually) are living in Canada.
Unfortunately I had to leave. I'm Greek and I couldn't stand living away from Greece any longer. It was an irrational decision I know but I cannot explain it.
I have traveled all over the world and if there is one place I want to live (aside Greece) that's Canada. |

I was born and brought up in Vancouver BC (I'm 24 now) so I hope I can be of some help to you.
The older I become the more I am grateful for living in Canada. I should also add that I am Asian and I've never had a rascist experience here, everyone is really nice and non-judgemental. For example, we have Chinese New Years celebrations and Greek festivals every year.
The best things about Canada are IMO, the majority of friendly people, the wonderful colleges/universities, the beautiful nature, the fresh air! and the feeling of safety in everyday life.
The more I travel around the world, the more I can see that Canada is one of the best places to live. We have free health care and the best thing is if you are a nice person, 99.9% of the the time others will be just as nice. Kindness, acceptance, manners etc. are things that most Canadians are proud to be.
To me, Canada seems like a place where the motto is "If you're not hurting anyone, live your life" =)
I feel very proud to be Canadian and I wish that everyone could enjoy the best things about living in a society like Canada.
P.S I'm not saying that it's 100% perfect here but it's as close to anything humanly possible IMO. Heck, if nothing else, Eckhart Tolle lives in Vancouver! |

Canada looks good on average and on a short visit, but actually life here can be pretty grim for the poorer half of the population. The main problem has historically been to get a good job. Same as everywhere, I guess.
I was born here, left at 19 for university and came back when I was around 43 in the midst of a bad recession. Hard to get meaningful work or to make a career, but then I wasn't very motivated.
High schools here in Toronto....well about 25% of kids go on to university, 25% to two year colleges, 25% to apprenticeships in trades, and 25% straight to work. These are averages. If your child is in the academic stream the odds of going on to tertiary education are much higher. Also there are a lot of second and third chances to go to university as an adult if you take them.
No time to write more.
Come here and spend a summer--- find a cheap basement apartment of sublet on www.craigslist.org in the Canadian city you're interested in. You can probably find some sort of work so you break even.
Over here, we think the UK might be the place to be....costly to live, but in Europe, and. to us. interesting...... |

it haas a heck of a lot going for it
it has vast natural resources
its economy is relatively immune from other coutnries,
its balance of payments position is pretty good.
if you are seriously considering moving then I'd argue the place to go is probably BC, almost certainly Vancouver.
The people are open, positive, friendly and welcoming, The weather is fine... sort of similar to the UK, certainly you don't get the extreme cold, snow & ice of the East of Canada.
The middle bit is a bit of a godforsaken hole..... around Alberta and the like.
if you are seriously thinking about it, and you and your family are young enough go for it.....
I don't think the medium to long term future for the UK has any upside whatsoever, its going to tank and when it does I don't know where it will level out at. |

It's a great country, that gets up the nose of it's southern neighbour.
Seriously medical is a lot cheaper. Where you go depends on what you can do, work wise, as some provinces are more selective than others. You may also be asked for proficiency in non English languages. |

It really depends on what age your children are!!
If they are still at school then I can understand your concerns!
But I love Canada and I've never even been lol, would love to go though! I have a cousin that lives out there and the photo's that I have seen especially the snow ones are great!
Good luck if you do decide to go out there!
Wish I were as brave to just think about it lol. |
