The Louisiana Purchase was named after the Louisiana Territory (which at the time was the heartland of present-day USA from all the way up into Montana and all the way down to the area around New Orleans and the mouth of the Mississippi.

Louisiana Territory (and the state that was later formed) is actually named after King Louis XIV, the ruler of France from 1643 to 1715.

The US bought the land from France in 1803.
