They're not serious are they ? |
http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/080125/national/australia_cda_warning
I wasn't aware Canada was so dangerous... :)
I love the part about "...the threat of terrorism, heavy snow, ice and forest fires that can erupt "at any time."
We have something called the Weather channel for the Heavy Snow, Ice storms that erupt out of nowhere. (It's pure HELL, I tell you... I even had to shovel my driveway once this winter)...
... and I wasn't aware Canada had ever been attacked by Terrorists ? Additional Details Forever: I'm not laughing at what they are warning about, so much as how exaggerated it is... It's not like you're going to be on Vacation in Banff, Calgary and out of nowhere *BAM* You're in an Ice Storm or a raging Forest Fire breaks out... It might ruin your vacation but the actual chances of death or injury due to these things is minimal...
The odds are probably higher that you might hit a deer or moose on the highway...
Oh and Canada is not in danger of Terrorist attack. There has never been a Terrorist attack on Canada. In theory it is possible, but the chances are remote... The only threat from Terrorists to Canada might be that a Nuclear warhead could be detonated in the US close enough to our borders... perhaps Detroit or New York, and the winds are northbound...
It wasn't too long ago that North Korea threatened to launch their entire arsenal of missiles into South Korea with an estimated death toll in the millions... and we're more dangerous to travel to then that ? |

I read the austalian advisory, then I read the Canadian governments advisory about australia. I really think the aussies are just striking back at the Canadian government for saying the same things about australia.

I don't know. With 88 Australians dying in the Bali Terrorists attacks, I am pretty sure they are touchy about that subject, and don't just report caution in Canada only. But with that many deaths, they are going to try warn their citizens. Bali probably considered safe at the time too.
And lets see....the last Australian to die in Canada died of...hhhmmm? What? OH yeah, DIED in an Avalanche! One of 11 avalanche deaths this season. Actually, tourist seem to be more prone to avalanche deaths than Canadians. It is mostly skiers skiing out of bounds. But again, hats off to them for warning their citizens, if one fewer tourists dies in an avalanche because his country told him to be cautious about it, then it is worth it.
I suggest reading the actual advisory instead of the sensationalized Internet news article. |

Well cloudcity-I hope they aren't serious--that kind of commentary would rank the Australians up there with our American friends as being ignorant about the world around them. |

If you read further in the article they say it is based on old information.
The threat of terrorism comes from our geographic location. The chance that it will happen (or at least an attempt) in the U.S. is pretty high, and because we live next door and share a border, that risk extends to us as well. Remember, New York really isn't that far from Quebec and Ontario.
Heavy snow and ice CAN happen at any time (in the winter). We usually get 2-7 days notice of a big storm,(not always!) but where I live, snow squalls can, and do start pretty quickly. I think this warning is fair. Can you imagine planning a vacation and not being able to get around or do some of your activities because all of a sudden you are in the middle of a snow storm? They need to know that it is a possibility.
Forest fires don't usually erupt out of nowhere, but they can't be planned either. Canada has lost millions of hectares of forests in the past few years. A warning is fair, they need to know they could be evacuated or roads could be closed for this reason.
I agree that they could change the wording of their warning, but it really isn't untrue.
Just because you haven't shovelled doesn't mean heavy snow doesn't happen. Orillia Ontario has received almost a metre in the last 6 days! |

Actually that article doesn't say it all. The following link is the actual advisory. They say that BC is an active earthquake zone. Okay, yes they do have some but they are tiny little quakes that almost no one notices unless they are watching for them.
It's a little overdone I think.

Trust me when i tell you this it doesn't surprise me. During my stint in the armed forces we used to go to Washington state to conduct heavy weapons training. As there are no ranges on Vancouver Island capable of handling the big stuff. Anyway sitting in the mess having a beer one night. And American servicemen asked me how we secured our dog sleds at the border. Before we took the bus down to the base lol. I told him our Eskimo dog handlers were taking care of them until we returned and headed back to our base. Of course the dogs didn't like crossing to the island in a kayak. |
