Things to do this summer in Edmonton? |
I am in Edmonton for the summer and I want to do as much as possible while I'm here. I live by the U of A campus and I don't have a car.
I already know that there will be a number of festivals this summer.
I am looking for things to do on a daily basis.
Please suggest restaurants, events, classes and how to get there by public transity from the university.
Please do not suggest restuarants on Whyte Ave or West Ed Mall.
I would also like to know about things happening on the U of A campus. |

the actual campus is fairly dead during the summer but you can check out the Power Plant and RATT on campus (food and entertainment)
this link will give you U of A events http://www.events.ualberta.ca/
there is the river valley of Sask drive that runs along the U of A - tan, bike, roller blade, people watch, jog
you can walk down to Hawrelak park
walk to Whyte (I know you said no Whyte ave but I love it - walking along the street stopping for a coffee and people watching is great, Dadeos' is a great unique restaurant on Whyte)
take the LRT downtown (there will be festivals happening downtown) I love Pagolac in China town for Vietnamese
the librarys have free movie nights
the Sidetrack Cafe downtown (food and entertainment)
the Running Room on 109st has lots of different types of classes
The Sugar Bowl
Set in a historic building circa 1943, this coffeehouse is a popular destination for the University crowd and frequently hosts jazz, blues, DJs and folk acts. Enjoy coffees, Italian grilled sandwiches or their signature carrot cake. Full service tapas menu and a weekend brunch. Mon to Fri 7 am - midnight; Sat & Sun 8 am - midnight.
Address: 10922–88 Ave. Edmonton AB
check out SEE and VUE and DOSE for things to do (free magazines that are everywhere on Whyte) |

I think you'll get bored in Edmonton and go to Calgary for most of the time. LOL
Calgary has Heritage park, and Calgary Zoo and the Stampede and the mountains aren't too far away! (Banff) |

When you get bored with Edmonton, hop the bus and come on south to Lethbridge, where my friends and I will show you a good time. You can visit the Fort, Japanese Gardens, museum, soup kitchen, etc. |

Just try places and check it out... geez if the festivals, whyte ave, the mall and the Oilers aren't enough for you, maybe you should move.
Edit: don't you think it's cute the way some people sign their comments with the initials of their avatars? Yeah.... totally..... |

Try The Golden Bird in China town. Take the LRT from the Uof A to downtown and then you'll have to look into the bus. I can't remember the number. They serve their best on Sundays.
Try seeing the ESO . I believe you can still see them during practise for free? Or a lot less, anyways. The Muttart Conservatory is great. I've never been there by bus, so you'd have to look into it. There is a phone number you can call for bus schedules etc. They are very helpful.
Do you jog? The river valley rocks. Also, the kinsmen centre has any sort of exercise you could want. Short bus ride from the U.
Have a good summer. |

Get a bus pass. It makes getting around a whole lot easier. You can plan your trips online - just input your starting point, end point and you will be given a selection of bus routes.
Check out the city of edmonton website. It has links to all kinds of events.
Rent a bike. Get the bike path map from city website.
Go to Little Italy, Chinatown.
Visit the Provincial Museum. Heck, visit the Police museum. It's at least free.
Go to every event that happens downtown. It's really easy to get there from the U. Just hop on the LRT.
Go to National Aboriginal Day - June 21
Go to the farmer's market downtown on Saturdays -104th? street. (I don't do street numbers very well).
Get the Edmonton Journal on Fridays and Saturdays. There's always listings of things to do. You can always read it for free at the U library, or a public library.
Talk to people. They always have opinions and are usually happy to help visitors. |

On a nice afternoon, go to Rose Bowl Pizza on 117th St. just north of Jasper Avenue. They have the best deep dish pizza and a great patio. I recommend the Rose Bowl Special or the splendidly named Chef's Mistake Special. |

Hi, I would check the Chamber of Commerce for Edmonton. They have a special events page that will tell you a great deal about what is going on in the city and area! The direct link to the special events page is http://www.edmontonchamber.com/mod.php?mod=userpage&menu=1104&page_id=13. I found some pretty cool stuff there. For listings of cool restaurants in your area check the Reviews in the Yahoo Local section. There are prob a number of reviews in that area and the locals can help you with that better! Good Luck and have a great summer!
I just checked Yahoo Canada and you know what? They don't have a LOCAL section. Sorry bout that. |
