This is about renegotiating the US border with Canada. Do you think the US got ripped off? |
I mean the Maine-New Brunswick border. Here's what happened. It was all finalized except for where the border line would actually be on the map. Everyone knew it was the St. John River but the map was lost. So finally Benjamin Franklin takes a blank map and a red pencil and goes in a room by himself and when he comes out there's a red line on the St. Croix River. We lost a lot of valuable territory. I'm not saying we should get it all back. After all we screwed up but obviously Franklin was mentally incompetent to negotiate a legal document or had been bribed.
I'm just saying it would be a gesture of good will to clear the air on this travesty. Additional Details Werepood seems to be confusing land purchases with border negotiations. Now I'm not a lawyer but I see a clear difference. Still and all, if there is any taint or cloud on these titles, I'd be open to seeing them ironed out.
I think Stevens Point in BC and that spit of land in the Lake of the Woods in Ontario could be the beginning of a quid pro quod on this. |

Well, since I LIVE in N.B.,I don't really see your point.
Do you honestly believe any Canadian (or American) would want to renegotiate it?
The past is past,my friend.
Maine and New Brunswick are very friendly with each other, and each are happy to be where they are.
Now,did the U.S. get ripped off? At the time....I repeat....at the time,I would say yes.
As for,"clearing the air" on this....there is no air to clear, really.
Edit:
Why not give Canada more land? Let people in Maine move, instead.See how they would feel about giving land they have been living on for Generations,to Canada.
Canadians are proud of where they live. They wouldn't agree to leaving it,no matter how much money you compensated them with. |

Since it all belonged to the Iriquois, the Sioux, the Hurons, and the other native tribes here, and they were "ripped off" by selling the land to the British and French for some nice shiny beads and some baubles, why don't we all go back to Europe and give it back to the rightful owners?
After all the contracts that they signed were unlawful since they could not read the language or understand the scope of what they were selling.
I'm just saying you may want to get over it and deal with more important issues from today. Will you be able to buy food and pay rent next month, or would you prefer I sell you New Brunswick at a "preferred rate"? |

Maybe Franklin wasn't incompetent or unethical, maybe he just wasn't very good at geography.
I think that the land should be given back to the US after the US pays France for the real value of the Louisiana purchase and pays Russia for the real value of Alaska and settles all of the outstanding treaties with Native Americans.
In other words, it won't happen. Get over it.
Besides, I think the US has many, many more pressing problems right now than the border of Maine and New Brunswick. |

okay Canada will renegotiate that Maine/New Bruunswick thing but while we are at it we were supposed to get all the territory down to Columbia River (Whasington, Oregon) but at last minute US sailed one little ship around the cape and founded Astoria Oregon thereby knocking our claim in the pacific northwest back north to 49th parallel.
Which means seattle, tacoma, Portalnd and the other vancouver in washington should all be ours too!
Vancouver, Canada
PS and what where they drinking when they came up with border thru the head of Lake Superior. Must have got lost or drunk on the border survey and wandered around a bit |

What about all the land that the US took from Canada during the unprovoked attacks of the War of 1812? Most of Western New York belonged to Canada. Gonna give it back? |

Canadians are expert negotiators, that's how Canada came to be and that's the reputation that Canada has among world leaders. |
