This question is specific to Ontario Canada - does anyone know what area you can have more than three dogs? |
I have four small dogs (Shih Tzus about 10 lbs.) but have found out I am only allowed two where I just moved to - I love my dogs more than anything and will move rather than have to part with them but other than Kingston Ontario I cannot find any other place that has a more than three limit. I would move there but have to stay within at least 1 1/2 hr. or so commuting distance to Toronto because of Dr. appointments every two weeks. I've checked regulations and by-laws but this information is so carefully hidden it is impossible to find. I have a disability and am very isolated - not many people have time for you when you have handicap - but my dogs are my loyal friends and keep me going. Can anyone help? Thank you so much. (Before anyone asks my disability does not prevent me from taking care of my dogs and I am a responsible dog owner and keep them clean and make sure they see the vet, etc. - they are like treasured children to me). |

Unfortunately, legislation of this type is passed by each individual municipality, so you would have to review the bylaws of any place you might move to, to know what their requirements are. And, you're right, it's very hard to unearth.
I would suggest that you contact the Ontario SPCA and explain the problem to them. They would be more likely to know which areas have by-laws in place which limit dogs. Another approach might be to see if you can get a breeder's or kennel permit in your area, which would allow you to have more than the regulation number of dogs.
Good luck! I live out in the country, in an unincorporated area, and do Great Dane rescue, so I know what you are going through. |

Do your own thinking!

They do exist.
From where I live, which isn't really in good commuting distance, but -- for some inspiration, maybe?
"Limitations of the Number of Pets:
If you live in Almonte Ward, Hamlets of Blakeney, Appleton, Clayton, Pakenham or in registered plans of subdivision, you are permitted to keep no more than 3 dogs.
If you live in other than those areas listed above, you are permitted to keep no more than 6 dogs
Hunters are permitted to keep no more than 12 dogs."
(from http://www.mississippimills.ca/ )
Areas not listed above = pretty rural. Have you looked outside of cities and towns much? |

Shoot, I was going to answer Kingston, Ontario. Which is where I live....why dont you give us a gander? We have the hospital to go to between Toronto and Ottawa...matter of fact those two areas fly people to us all the time. I work here at the hospital. Im diabetic, who had a car accident 7 years ago and was in a wheel chair for 6 months, so I have a slight disability, and last year I had cancer treatment....not complaining just saying great medical treatment for all ailments are available here. I have 2 mini-dashunds, but friends have more. Having a limit on well cared for happy dogs should be a crime!! If they are not bothering neighbors with noise then they shouldnt be anyone else's business. Good luck with the dog hunt. |

Did you try Guelph, Brampton, or Mississauga???
Boy, I feel for you and I wish I could give you a better answer.
I know that my pets are like my children as well and I don't think I could ever part with them
Good Luck. |

what a stupid law. it not quantity its quality! when will law makers figure that out?? everyday i see people who own 1 pet and are too stupid and too cheap to look after it and then i see people with 5 or more pets and would sell their house before letting the animal go without something.
i know it does not answer your question but hang in there and good luck!! |

Will anyone notice that you have more than the legal amount of dogs? If anyone really had the time to be anal about it you could say that you are dog walking or taking care of someone elses dogs. Sometimes there are laws and no one knows that they are there so no one will pay attention to the breaking of them. It reminds me of a by- law in my city that doesn't allow more than one of a type of lawn tool in your shed
If no one notices... |
