Smoking pot in Canada is NOT legal, but tolerated in some cities. In Montreal, for example, I have seen a security person at a fotball game simply ask the fellow to put it out and leave it out or he would have to escort him from the event.
Of course, if the cops see you, they might bust you for it, and then you have to deal with court dates and getting a criminal record and such.
To me, I would tell anyone who wants to smoke pot that if you ever saw The Untouchables, there was a good line in there that they said: "Word is they're going to repeal prohibition. What'll you do then?" The reply: " I think I'll have a drink."
In other words, once it's legalized, smoke as much as you like. Until then, fight to legalize it, or go to a country where it is legal. |

Marijuana is illegal under federal law. Possession and use of marijuana is a federal crime which will get you a criminal record that will be very hard to get rid of and which will block you access to many jobs and make it impossible for you to go to the US without a visa. Ontario has legalized marijuana under provincial law (up to 30 grams for personal use) but it remains illegal under federal law so you could still get a criminal record for possessing it there. I've heard, however, that police in Vancouver, British Columbia are usually tolerant towards it - but there remains the risk of a zealous cop arresting you so it's not worth the risk. If you want to smoke marijuana, go to Amsterdam. |
