Toronto, Canadians, please help!? |
I am a teacher and my husband is a skilled laborer and we are thinking of moving to Toronto. Can anyone make any recommendations as to what is a good, reasonably priced part of town to move to? We were looking at Oshawa but heard it was a crackhead town. What about anywhere closer to Toronto proper? We are so excited to move and need some serious help before we do. Thanks so much, guys!
Also, does anyone know if you actually need teachers in Toronto or nearby? We are researching but nothing works better than local help! |

oh gosh
definetly stay away from oshawa... besides their hockey team sucks anyways ;) lol
brampton is good and reasonably price but its called brangledash for a reason (mostly immigrants live there, particularly from the middle east and india)
vaughn and richmond hills are really good, one of your more wealthy areas (but have reasonably priced homes too)
toronto does have some schools/high schools that are needing teachers like Humberview High School in Bolton, 20 mins or so from toronto
toronto is amazing i love it there, i live an 1 1/2 from there.
good luck :]

dont let people scare you away from Ontario, Ontario is kick *** regardless of what people say. I've lived in 7 of the 13 provinces/territories (BC, Alberta, ONTARIO, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Nunavut) and ontario was one of the best, bias because i was born here and lived here the most but ontario is amazing to say the very least |

If you want a job, instantly, then don't head for the big city but opt for the northern cities. In every province across Canada, there is a desperate shortage of teachers in northern towns and cities. There's a big plus because the cost of living is much lower and it's easier to find housing. If your husband is a skilled laborer, he'll find work anywhere. |

Oshawa and Milton are NOT parts of Toronto. They are small towns not too far from Toronto, though they are not close either. Personally I wouldn't advise either of them (and I think Hamilton or Guelph are a much better choice if you decide to go that far from the city)
If you are looking for a town closer to Toronto, than probably you can look at Richmond Hill, Maple, Thornhill - they all are within 30 min (or less) from Toronto's subway, and all 3 are considered very high quality.
There are some areas within Toronto that also have a feeling of small town, and are not that pricey. For example Etobicoke, or some parts of North York. |

I'm a teacher in the Toronto area--and I hate to tell you--there are not many jobs around. There are many jobs for skilled labourers, though.
North of Toronto proper is affordable--the closer you get to the city the more expensive it gets. I could be more specific if you mentioned what kind of price range you were looking at when buying a house. |

Stay away from Oshawa, Pickering, Ajax and go more west. I live in Etobicoke and like mentioned above its a suburb in Toronto really close to Mississauga. You are in the TTC (transit) and Go Train area so you are very accessible to downtown. Mississauga also is reasonably priced and has buses connecting to subway stations. Oakville is nice as well and about a 30 min drive to Toronto. |

"Toronto proper" is all about neighbourhoods. Some are great, some are becoming great, and some are not great. Leslieville is an area that's becoming great. I'd seriously recommend renting a cheap apartment for six months or so before settling into a neighbourhood. Consider apartment buildings at Yonge & Davisville, Yonge & Eglinton, The Esplanade or High Park, or rooms in houses near the Danforth (west of Pape, no more than 1km from the actual Danforth), or Little Italy; try the Annex (Bloor between Spadina and Bathurst) for both.
House prices are falling, so renting is also a good option for the short term.
Try viewit.ca for apartments.
Try www.tdsb.on.ca for jobs. There are still loads of "help wanted" signs in town; who knows what 2009 brings, but for now no one will have trouble getting a quick job. I hear teaching is tough to break into ... it may take a year or two of making connections, substituting, etc. That said, there are loads of colleges and private colleges, ESL, etc. for the short term. |

I would suggest Etobicoke or Mississauga. Oshawa is not a great choice as there are a lot of unemployed people due to the layoffs in the auto industry (mostly auto workers there). As for your job search just have lots of money saved to live on until you find a job. If you can get here prior to moving I would suggest going to the Board of Education and seeing if there are jobs available and apply for them. Unfortunately any place that is decent to live in either in Toronto or surrounding areas is fairly expensive. Even a one bedroom apartment can be close to $1,000 per month. |

i suggest Mississauga. There are reasonably priced homes and apartaments as well as semi's. The commute to Toronto isn't bad at all.
vaughn is good as well, but is one of the more wealthy areas. The commute to Toronto isn't bad either |

If you are coming to Canada. I would suggest Milton Ontario. It is within commuting distance of Toronto and the houses are more reasonably priced. My girlfriend has lived there for quite awhile and her husband has commuted back and forth to Toronto with no problems. |

Suburbs of Toronto?
Thornhill, Richmond Hill, Vaughan... They're all developing pretty rapidly and schools are going up left and right so I'm sure you can find a job.
A good sized house can be probably around 500k which is pretty good.. (But I live in Toronto so maybe my idea of "good" real estate pricing is a bit skewered)
As well other places would be southern like Hamilton, Guelph etc but I personally don't like those areas |

STAY AWAY FROM TORONTO!!! Teachers are unionised and in a pi$s poor contract. Laborours are a dime a dozen here. Not much for work. Ontario sucks. My wife is a nurse and we are going out west to Red Deer. |
