I remember the name Toronto have to do with the "shinning or shimmering waters of Lake Ontario'. The fort that was there originally was called Fort York, which then was used to name the settlement around the fort.

Taronto, is a Huron word meaning Trees in the water. When the orignal Native settlers of the area, used to portage around the Lake, it appeared that many of the trees along the shore were growing right out of the water. The Native trail running alongside the Lake was also called Taronto Portage. The French, upon hearing the locals refer to it as Taronto, dubbed Lake Ontario, Lac de Taronto.

Toronto was likely the name of an Iroquis Indian chief but it can't be proven.

Toronto was not named after a city in the UK.
When Europeans arrived, the area was inhabited by Huron tribes, previously inhabited by Iroquois tribes. Toronto is thought to be from the Iroquois word 'tkaronto' - means 'place where trees stand in the water'.
