Toronto Violence?

Time for a real question, what are your thoughts on the violence in general in toronto and what needs to be done for the violence to STOP

Toronto was one of the first cities to ban smoking in restaurants and it was a very unpopular decision at that time. NOW, cities around the world are following suit. Toronto has also provided other unpopular services, passed by council, yet only to find the citizens later begin to value the restaurant health food ratings, the blue box programs, new bike lanes, rules for parking permits, etc.

Now, Mayor Miller wants to lobby the feds in Ottawa to pass gun control measures--I say why doesn't the council pass a law just for Toronto? If they have done it before they can do it again. Anyone caught with an unregistered firearm in Toronto faces an extremely heavy Toronto by-law fine -- imposed by our police force of course. Anyone not registering their firearm with our Toronto Police Services and live or are employed to work in Toronto must face the same penalty.

This will be a good wake up call to the folks over at Parliament!

The Toronto School Boards ought to spend money on an information package and include a seminar for all their students in order to understand the implications of what happens if they are caught stealing, bringing a weapon to school or charged with assault. Educate them about the possible fines, jail time or cost of damages their parents will be faced with. Any student expelled by school must undergo counselling or rehabilitation before they are allowed to re-enter any of the neighbouring schools. Also they must understand that without a high school diploma, there will be many jobs denied them.

Colleges and universities ought to bring down their fees. They are preventing many good students from entering their programs due to the higher fees. In turn it leads to poverty when graduates go for lower skilled jobs and lower wages. We need more jump-start funding programs for children for families to invest in order to pay off the costs of future training courses.

More and more citizens ought to ditch their cell phones in favour of handhelds with digital cameras options. That way they can load the photo to the Crimestoppers TIPS hotline. Councillor Cesar Palacio mentioned that the City of Toronto in the future will indeed accept cellphone photos of images for quick action on graffiti, garbage and damages.

Also, it is time to bring back the commercials and posters that taught that racism is a hate crime. We need to be reminded that Canada doesn't tolerate bigots and never will.

u r dumb
I guess you can ask this about any major city in the world .
Violence is not just a Toronto or Canadian issue infact many other places in the world have much more violence .Sadly you can not control the criminal mind

I live in toronto ... and the violence is gettin much higher .. but you can't do anything about it .. miller's trying to get some handgun ban but thats not gonna go anywhere. i think there's somethin like 8 - 10 homicides already in 2008

Violence in Toronto is gaining, no doubt. What has to change is the judicial system in how they punish folks who are charged with gun crimes, domestic abuse and such. It is commonly heard that these perps will appear in a court and be let out on bail, only to reoffend while out on bail. For the most part, the cops are doing their jobs in putting people behind bars, but the courts are not keeping them there, so there is really no incentive to not do the crime!

This year alone, there have been two cases of innocent men being shot by a stray bullet - it's getting scary to walk on the street now, it's getting scary to leave my home too! Acts of violence are on the rise and it's only going to get worse.

Each December the Toronto Star newspaper publishes a photo gallery of the year's homicide victims.

The majority are young, non-white males.

So I would suggest there are issus of gangs, racism and poverty which need to be addressed.

I don't have a solution and it doesn't seem anyone else does, either. It's very sad.

The only encouraging thing is that the gallery is very small compared to other cities.

I hope it stays that way.

A handgun ban won't stop anything. Almost all the handguns used in TO crimes are smuggled in from the US, so technically they are already banned.

Despite what people say about immigration, most crime is the result of poverty and/or drug addiction. Eliminate poverty and drug addiction and you'll eliminate a huge amount of crime.

Toronto is a safe city compared with US cities. Crime and violence rate is at a low level. Probably not too serious. Of course things could be better. But we must be happy that things are standing as they are, and are not worser.
