Traveling to Canada in December? |
I'm from Miami and I'm going to Canada in December. I've never been in such a cold weather before and I'm going crazy cause I don't know what kind of clothes and shoes to buy. Do I always have to wear boots? What do people wear when they are going clubbing? Where do they leave their coats? I need some orientation please!!! Can I wear jeans? Whatever you can contribute will be highly appreciated! Thanks._ Additional Details Going to Niagara Falls for a couple od days and then to Toronto |

Get some good quality thermals to wear under your jeans (jeans give very little insulation). Under Armor is a good brand or go with any heavy feeling polyester one. Don't get the cheap stuff from Wal Mart! I always use thermals under my jeans when I go to Alaska in the winter.
Get decent cold weather gloves and a thick knit hat that covers your ears. The cutesy ones at places like Old Navy are only for looks and don't keep you warm. Check out REI online for good quality warmth. You need a warm coat, don't be cheap on the coat.
I usually wear winter boots in Alaska, the fashionable kind that have the fluffy warm wool like stuff inside and bottoms that will grip for snow & ice.
Most places in cold climates have facilities for you to check your coat & boots at the door. They don't expect you to go dancing in your down parka and boots!! Haha that'd be funny!!!
It's really not that big of a deal. Every building is heated and today's car heaters heat up super fast. You'll be fine.
Besides, with Global Warming you may be surprised at how warm it is. Last time I visited Alaska in the winter, it was in the 40's and all my winter clothes were too hot to wear... |

It depends on what part of Canada. Vancouver weather is similar to Northern California.
On the other hand, if it is Ontario or Quebec, you can expect cold days and even colder nights. You may get by with hiking boots or even running shoes, but if you get any big snowfall, you will want to have the boots to keep the slush and road salt out of the socks and away from your feet.
The best way to dress is to use layers. If you go to a club, they usually have a mandatory coat check in winter because they don't want winter coats clogging up the aisles around the tables. It is also safer to put it in there, since someone could easily steal your coat or its contents while your up dancing or at the bar or bathroom.
Jeans are possible, but you will probably want some long underwear beneath them to give you that added warmth.
Keep in mind that if you are from Miami, you will feel the cold more than someone from up in Canada. A friend of mine from Toronto told me how they were down in Florida on the beaches in January in bathing suits and swimming when the Floridans were out with long coats and looking like they were freezing. |

hahahah... I think its so funny to read other peoples responses as to how cold they think canada is! December isnt that cold anymore in ontario.. it tends to be bitterly cold more towards the end of December to Febuary. You could get away with normal shoes as we rarely have snow that sticks till after christmas. As for clothes... just bring some layers - no longjohns needed! and when you go to the club - if it by chance is a little more nippy than you can stand.. just bring a coat and leave it at coat check or leave it in the car (unless there is a line up at the club) otherwise - we wear the same clothes you would wear to a club in Miami cause its usually as hot as miami INSIDE the club.. hahahaha... Hope you have a great time in Ontario... its a lot of fun here! |

you don't need to wear boots but thick socks are a must.
You can wear jeans but I suggest a thin sweater with a winter jacket.
People wear fancy clothes to the bars but some people just wear normal clothes. depends on the person.
It's really not that cold in Toronto...but then again I grew up in an ingloo. haha. |

If you're coming to Vancouver, just a good rain coat and a wool sweater should get you through, anywhere else and you need serious thermal gear: boots, mittens, parka, long-johns.
Canada is a big place with many climatic variations, I suggest visiting the west coast where it's warm... let all those eastern bums freeze, come play in B.C.. |

If u can postpone the trip, that would be best. Otherwise, u will have to wear layers of clothes to keep warm. |
