Yonge & Sheppard is a fantastic location steps from the cinemas, furniture stores, grocery stores, and restaurants. And of course you are right at a major subway / bus hub..... 2 minutes, going East on the Sheppard subway line, you have a high-end shopping mall (Bayview village with a third cinema that offers some more international movies - another 3 minutes and you reach Fairview Mall) and a little under 30 min going south on the Yonge-University-Spadina line, you're in the downtown core. If you need to go out of GTA you have the GO Bus station 2 stops north of Sheppard and 1 stop south of Sheppard. Now, I admit that our subway is not as sophisticated as the underground (which I had the pleasure of riding when I was London)...but what we lack in subterreanean service we make-up with ground service...You have "rocket" buses which are express buses and regular buses that cover areas not serviced by the subway. Now I've lived in this city for 28 years and I have yet to require a car...It may not look impressive on the maps but really...our transit service is pretty efficient...The lack of parking, the cost, and gas prices certainly make the TTC a better choice for getting around in our city.

Toronto has buses and subways that cover the city pretty well. Some of the outer limits can be a bit spotty, growing faster than transit can be put in. I know that there is bus and GO train service to a number of other cities like Oakville, Burlington, Hamilton, etc. I know a few people there that just use transit or their bikes because they live and work in town.

I agree with above. I live at Bathurst and Sheppard (one major intersection west of Yonge) and have a car. I use my car to drive to Wilson Station, park it there and take the subway everywhere. I used to live in Scarborough, that's why I had the car. Now I'm having a hard time giving it up, even though I really don't use it. At Yonge and Sheppard you will do fine without a car, and there's a Hertz right at the corner so if you ever need to rent one it's right there.

The TTC really is the better way to travel. Having lived and worked in various parts of the city, transit is least expensive and usually fastest way. Parking is usually outrageous, especially downtown, and highway traffic is always jammed.
TTC is not without drawbacks though! Winters can be cold and waiting for a bus is not fun, but hey can't have it all. By the way, the hours of transit are better than most large cities. Also, the TTC is safe as a rule!

You will need to know where you will be and where you will need to get to before you can tell whether or not you will need some form of transportation. Not everything in the city is close by or easy to get to. Do a little research and you should be able to figure it out.

It's not very comprehensive - it was built in the 1950's when the population was about 1/4 of what it is now.

Here's my advice: if you are living and working on the subway line, you should be fine. But I still recommend a car if you're at Yonge and Sheppard, since you're not in the downtown core. There isn't too much around there in terms of clothes or furniture shopping, so you might want to drive to one of the malls, otherwise it's a 30 minute subway ride downtown.
