US Citizen Denied Entry To Canada?

I am a US Citizen and I was carrying my US passport to cross the border to Canada through Sarnia to visit a friend, however, I was denied an entry for a reason I never heard of which is: they can't verify that I am on vacation with my employer. I have no felony or misdemeanor of any kind and I have been to Canada many times. Also, they had me sign a paper to voluntarily withdraw my application to enter Canada and agree to leave Canada without delay. Of course they've searched my car and found nothing. Appreciate all your comments.

It's amazing what they can do at the border. My friend was trying to go down to the States and she was denied because the US customs was trying to tell her they thought she was going to stay there permanently as her boyfriend lives there.

She tried to explain that she owned her own home, had her own business and that her kids were registered in school up here but somehow they just got it in their head that she was going to stay. She was denied.

It took her a month of fighting (her lawyer was involved) to get formal permission to go to the States.

Those who are entrusted with controlling ports of entry (in any country) have some significant flexibility in determining whether to let someone in or not. The reasons for denying entry (which is a privilege, not a right ... even for citizens of the country being entered) can range from incomplete or suspect documentation, to criminal history, to active participation in a crime at the border point, to the guard being suspicious of you. Basically if they don't want you to enter, you don't.

I would investigate with with the US authorities, just in case someone has stolen your identity and is causing you grief ... which will only get worse as time goes by.

You do not give sufficient details in your question; another poster brought up the point that you don't indicate what vehicle you were driving (or in which you were a passenger). If it was a company vehicle, they might reasonably expect you to be attempting to do business on the Canadian side of the border.

That's bizarre. Obviously, if you simply passed your documents to the agent, he/she had a minute or two to make sure that they were not fakes. There is zero chance that he/she tried to call you employer, much less know who your employer is in the first place. So, what the heck happened?

To find out, you have to contact the US State Dept or go through Homeland Security. Your name, or someone using your name, is on a list now. Find out now because the longer you are on that list, the more likely it will metastasize and you will encounter problems elsewhere. You may need to have a lawyer make a formal request using the Freedom of Info Act.

Certainly there are reasons for your denial.
If you want to know why you may contact the local Canadian Consulate and ask why, or contact an immigration lawyer.

There are endless possible scenerios here but could it be maybe you weren't driving "your" car.

Canada lets almost anyone into the country.
If you were denied, there are reasons you are not telling us.

I heard a few horror stories from Canadians crossing the border as well from the American side !
WHo knows ...wheather American or Canadian border they can both have bad days ...or maybe they have been watching too many A&E cop reality shows ...but trust me American border patrol do the same at times to canadians as well.It occured to my friend when he was crossing into the states ! They looked at his license and birth certificate and he has no criminal records. But I guess he's Italian and has a goatee so maybe they thought he was leary(mafia stereo type lol ) searched his car and still did not let him in

That's wierd. Before I check with Homeland Security (doubt it if they can do anything), why don't you investigate the situation more with the Canadian Consulate in NYC. You can write a letter to them or call them to ask for their reason for their action. That's really wierd.

Their address is 1251 Avenue of the Americas, NY, NY 10020-1175.

Wow, that has never happened to me. I've always thought the Canadians were so liberal and understanding? Beats me.

Sounds like the rush for the border has begun.
