Our road crews are excellent. I don`t believe chains are even allowed any more as they damage the roads too much. A good set of snow tires is sufficient. Make sure you have plenty of windshield fluid. Welcome to Canada and I hope you enjoy it. |

Chains, no. Snow tires, heater and antifreeze yes.
Also, if you have Ohio plates on your car, depending how the season is going and how that particular game goes you may find it advisable not to park it too near the Forum (yeah, whatever it's called now) in an unsupervised location. |

We DO have street crews and sand and salt.... because we're a metropolitan area.....
Now if you were headed to the backwoods of Quebec, then I'd advise you to bring the chains.
All your car needs is loads of antifreeze, an ice scraper and a working heater. :) |

No one seemed to point out that chains are illegal, they ruin the roads! And Quebec roads and highways are damaged and untaken care of enough. |

You don't need to put chains! There is not much snow in Montreal now. |

You won't need chains. Winter weight motor oil can't hurt. If the temperature drops below 0F your battery will only be at about 50% or less and 10W30 oil can get thicker than molasses at that temperature. Thicker oil maked it harder to crank the engine. You'll need an ice scraper for your windshield and a snow brush. If you stay in the city you can get by with all-season tires. Windshield washer fluid that is good to -30F is also required - and don't spray it on a cold windshield, unless you have bought the expensive special-purpose stuff. Even winter grade windshield washer fluid is NOT de-icer and will freeze on contact with a cold windshield creating a zero visibility condition. |

Chains, winter weight oil and lube, check the antifreeze in your car and install special windshield washer solution that contains antifreeze to keep your windshield clear. Also carry a scraper, to get the ice off your windshield.
Montreal is February is really fun - give yourself time to get around in Quebec and tootle over to the City of Quebec as well, if time allows, as it is more French-Canadian than Montreal.
Also learn a couple of words of French -- bonjour (bon -jhoor) means hello, and merci (mer-see) means thank you. They'll help a lot! |

Snow tires should be sufficient as well as a working thermostat & heater inside your car, an ice scraper and some windshield fluid, of course!
Good luck and enjoy our Canadian winter! |
