I was born and raised in Montreal and the flashing green means advanced turning light. It is like an arrow. Don't forget that there is no right turn on red in Montreal. If you go off the island there are some places where you can turn right on red but you must look at the signs because there are time restrictions. Enjoy Montreal it is a wonderful city especially in the summer.

Delayed red light for the opposing direction traffic, so that you can make a left turn. That is true I think in all of Canada, but Vancouver.

A side note. Right turns on Red is not permited in Montreal.

Looking at the previous answers, we have to be more precise here. For pedestrians, a red or orange (not green!) hand symbol flashing indicates it is forbidden to start crossing, but it is alright to finish crossing. For cars, a flashing green light is equivalent to a left turn green arrow, while the other direction still has stop signs.

Goddess of Grammar
On your theoretical driving test, it means that only that direction has a green light.

In practice, it means the same as any other colour light: go where you want to and if possible don't kill anybody.

Nelson_DeVon
It means go

It is the same thing as a green light.

stop

hilarywow
doesn't it mean that it's a pedestrian controlled intersection. When the button to cross is pressed, the light turns solid green, and then changes to red, so the pedestrian can cross. if no one presses the button, the light stays flashing green.

A flashing green light in Canada is the same thing as a green arrow in the states. Its simply a delayed light. Cars making a left turn at the redlight can make their turn as long as its still blinking green. Once it stops blinking and is a solid green light the cars must yield to any on coming straight traffic before making a left turn. Hope that helps.

CROSS FASTER BECAUSE THE RED LIGHT WILL COME SOONER, I LIVE IN MONTREAL SO I KNOW. MOST OF THE TIME THEY DO THAT ON MINOR STREETS THAT CROSS BIG BOULEVARDS.

Niagara Girl
Advance Green, means your side has a little more time to go, either turn or straight, before the oncoming turns solid green.

No wonder there are so many accidents!

Advanced (flashing) green – a signal allowing selected traffic to move forward through the intersection, usually to turn left, before other traffic is allowed to move forward.

Chairside Fellow
Hello,

Let's take a previous answer (which was correct!!!):

"Advanced (flashing) green – a signal allowing selected traffic to move forward through the intersection, usually to turn left, before other traffic is allowed to move forward."

and be a little bit more schematic!

Scenario 1- You drive vehicle A and you want to turn left. You see a non-flashing green light (g). You have to wait for vehicle B to cross the intersection because this one has also a green light (hence the priority).

--------1 1----------
<--------- B (g)
- - - - - - - - - -
A-(g) --/
--------1 1----------

Now, let's suppose you want to turn left, but you have a flashing green (FG) light. You don't have to wait for vehicle B to cross, since this one now sees a red (R) light.

--------1 1----------
<--------- B (R)
- - - - - - - - - -
A-(FG)-/
--------1 1----------

I hope it helped!

Drive carefully!
