It is an official National holiday and has been for over the last 75 years.

Here in BC all schools are closed along with banks and government offices. Stores open, but most have their Sunday hours and many stay closed until noon - after the 11am ceremony.

I live in Ontario and I remember getting it off in school, but only until about grade 3 (late 70's). I think it is shameful that it is not a statutory holiday.

At one time schools were closed on Remembrance Day. My parents (I'm in my 30s) always had Remembrance off when they went to school, but by the time I started in school, they were open. The reasoning was that people of my parents' generation very frequently had parents that had been in the war but for my generation that wasn't the case. Now just banks and government offices are closed on that day (at least in Ontario where I am)..

It is still an federal holiday in Canada, and is a provincial holiday in most provinces (Ontario and Quebec being exceptions).

when I was younger I remeber schoold use to have it off as well

Remembrance Day has and always been a Federal Holiday in Canada. Lots of ceremonies happen all over the nation, showing those who have served appreciation. Often lots of American veterans will come up to the ceremonies because it is more than is necessarily happening in their area.

There was even a Canadian musician who wrote a song about it, called Pittance in Time. It is an incredible video and something to watch.

It still is for government employees.

Armistice Day was renamed Remembrance Day in Commonwealth Countries after World War 2. The Armistice signed on November 11, 1918, marked the end of the First World War. November 11th will always be a sad anniversary for Canada, no matter what we call it. It will always be the National Day of Mourning, and always a Federal holiday.

Tyler
yes, and it still is
